hello people,
just a quick question,
what would be the best tyre to use 195x65x15 or205x60x15,i.e road holding/economy etc.
got a few of both and i'll need to buy one possibly
two for the next mot,

The way i understand tyres is that the
Wider i e the 205=more holding less economy
narrower the 195=more economy less holding

size doesnt really matter regarding ecomonmy. Thats mainly down to the compound of the tyre.... the wider the width will mean more grip but you wont nec' lose any economy because of it.....

well. my 1996 2.0 left the factory with 195X65X15 and the same car had it left the factory with a cosworth engine would have been fitted with the 205X65X15 tyres.
But I replaced my wheels with 12 spokes from the 7 egg shaped hole wheels.
So I got now 225X50X16 tyres now.
Notice nothing different. The fuel computer on the dash is telling me that I getting the same fuel figures as before the tyre change.

forgot to say yes of course the 195 is cheaper to buy than a 205 but when you get to 225 they cost even more.
but in my case i don't mine the extra exspence, more tyre on the road, i saying to myself is better grip, so safety is my main concern.
if i want to save money, i can always go to budget tyres.
but driving, i notice no differents, but i got it in my head that more tyre on road as got to be safer.
someone tell me if you think i am wrong.

Big ballon tyres are good over soft snow but less good on ice.
In this case, high power and large surface area can cause slippage, however if you also have the benefit of traction control it probably works out fine.
Thats why winter tyres in Scandinavia tend to be skinnier and tread pattern is more important
Interesting to get peoples thoughts/experiences over
the next couple of snowy icy days.
Already know that some of our more fun loving members will be reaching for the on/off switch on their traction control.

It had 225/50 ZR16 tyres on the 12-spoke wheels.
Now earlier today, I bought myself a 2.3 with exactly the same tyres & wheels. I was surprised, especially as the performance won't come anywhere near the Cossie, yet the tyres were the same.
Anyway, my favourite tyre calculator web page: http://www.chris-longhurst.com/carbibles/index.html?menu.html&tyre_b ible.html suggests that using 205/55 ZR16 tyres will do the same job - moreover this very site says that the 12-spoke wheels can be fitted with 205/55 no problem.
My question: Has anyone here actually done this change (225/50 to 205/55) and have they noticed any effects, ill or otherwise?

Because the outside diameter of the 205/55/16 tyre is approx 95.5% of the outside diameter of the 255/55/16 it means that if the speedometer was callibrated for the 255/55/16 and you were traveling at 70 mph on the 205/55/16 tyre you would in fact be traveling at approx. 66.85 mph (I wonder if this could explain why some people have noticed a differance in speedometer clock readings and those of sat nav systems).
If you can live with the above and the trade off in grip then I don't think there is a problem.

The figures suggest that the rolling radius difference is 1.57mm (+0.08%), giving a "70mph" speed of 70.06mph.

i.ve got a set of 225 on my 2.3 ultima est and i think they hold the road alot better than a 195 which i had on my scorp deisel and i think that the car handles much better with the wider tyre

Page 21 of the Ford accessories book states that cars with the 12 spokes (6.5 x 16" E40) can have a tyre size of 205/55 or 225/50
the 7 spoke 17" wheels can be fitted with 215/50, 225/45, 235/40 or 235/45 tyres now there is a difference for you!!
The strange thing is that the brochure was produced in July 98 which was a month or so after they stopped making the cars and it still has a full list of accessories!!

This is what I understand, up to round about November 1996, cars rolled out the factory on 195 and the 205 on cosworth.
The 2.3 engine was not around then.
Then round about November 1996, the 2.3 engine came about which more or less put paid to the 2.0 engine. I suppose you could have it to order, but who would want it over the 2.3.
So at that time, the wheels changed to 12 spoke. which where fitted with the 225 tyres on the 2.3 and the cosworth.
Both mine 2.3 cars had the 225 tyres on when I obtained them.

On my 2.0 this had 195 and I drove on these for two years or so,
Then I wanted a spare alloy wheel to replace the steel wheel in the boot but they sellor would only sell the set of four. so I had these.
These where fitted with 205 tryes as the car they came off was a cosworth. As the tyres where very good, I put these on to replace the 195.
Then I put on 12 spoke wheels with 225 tyres.
In driving, you will not notice any differents. the steering feels the same.
but the benefit, may be hidden, like the more rubber on the road as surely got to be safer.

flat out the 2.3 can hit nearly 130 mph (laws permiting)!  . hence the same wheel/ tyre combination.
not too bad for a big car.

the 2.0 ain't too far behind. mines sitting on 185/60/14 and hopefully will soon be down to 155/80/13,stretched over 13x7. gilrfriends audi is on 225/45/18 goodyear eagles and sticks like sticky stuff to a hairy blanket. Not very keen on low-pro's tho,stick well,but not a massive amount of warning before they break away.
