Hi all
Came home from work 20 miles no problem, left the car parked for about an hour, it started ok but after about 500 yard it stated to rev between 500 and 1500rpm when sat at the lights, also there was a strong smell of petrol. It then got better for a bit and then a lot worse I only just made it home. I vented the fuel cap just in case a vacuum had built up, but no better. Temprature and oil are all ok.
Any ideas ?
Thanks

Sounds like the classic signs of an unmetered airleak although some other members can probably give you some more info on how to check for this and sort it out.

THE STORY SO FAR
This morning when the car was cold I cleaned the MAF and the idle speed control valve then started the car up, It ran fine so I took it for a test drive, still ok, but when I get home it starts hunting again. I lifted the bonnet and found black smoke comming out of the heat sheids surrounding the exhaust manifold. I removed these and found the manifold has cracked, so i guess that this is upsetting the first O2 sensor. Spent the afternoon removing manifold so I can get it welded up, untill I can source a new one. It seems that the crack opens up when the manifold gets hot hence its ok when cold.

Dont forget to heat the area being welded up to cherry red before welding.

Hi all
I got the manifold welded up for £15 and got a set of gaskets from www.fordpartsuk.com for £16 (was told by local Ford dealer that the gaskets were no longer available) I then spent a cold Saturday morning fitting the manifold, no leaks now but the car won't drive, still hunting and seems to be running rich. I then had the car delivered to local garage to have fault code read, but they could not do it due to a faulty fuel cut off loom. They told me it was beyond them and i needed a auto electrician to fit a new loom they also told me that the ECU would also be shot due to shorts on loom. I had the car delivered back home, I ordered a new loom and spent 2 hours last week removing the old loom, it was in a poor state. Spend one hour fitting new loom, tried to start car, flat battery due to being stood for over 2 weeks, jump started it let it idle until warm and took it for a test drive, drove like new, so fingers crossed looks like its fixed.
