Steering joint needs grease

Hi guys,

Long time since I've posted which represents 70k miles of trouble free Scorpio motoring.

When using my air-con yesterday in traffic I got a problem that I used to think was unique to my old Ultima but obviously is not.

Problem is that the grease has disappeared from the ball joints between the steering rack and the track rods. This is pretty quiet until the air-con (in traffic) drips it's water onto the steering column and via that eventually into the aforementioned joint.

And it creaks like nothing on earth.

Question is, how do you get some grease into the joint? I've got a little on the outside having removed the gaiter but this doesn't last long.

Any help would be marvellous

Thanks

Mike

I know there must be someone out who knows the answer to this; it's got to be a common problem as it happened on my old one.

Please could you have another look at my original post and give me hand here.

Thanks

sorry mike, all the joints on the scorp are sealed for life, no facility to grease.

This brings me to a question,  does the rack and pinion steering  need any lubrication , or does the  power steering fluid do the job?

In the old days it was customary to  squirt some  gear oil  into  the bellows on each side  of the rack. It makes no mention of this on the Scorp site so I imagine it's unnecessary ( I hope ).

Hi Mike .. the rack ends are serviceable ..ie: the ball joint and track rod at the rack end which sounds where you mean .. the water ingress is quite common and is the cause of the actual rack damaging the inner seals of the rack body .. the arms from the outer track rod ends to that inner ball joint < either outside the gaiter or inside the gaiter > do not require greasing < save a touch on the slide if you want to .. hth .... regards ......STN
