Dodgy rev counter

Ever since I bought my Scorpio it's suffered from an eratic rev counter. It works fine about 10% of the time (idling at about 800 revs, motorway cruising at 3500 revs) the rest of the time it reads roughly treble what I think the correct rpm actually is and the needle fluctuates wildly. When idling it jumps anywhere between 1500 and 3000 revs with no change at all in the engine sound. Any ideas? I've a feeling it might be a common Scorpio fault as I've seen 2 on ebay with a similar problem.

When I first got my Scorpio I had this problem. It was fixed under warranty and was the diodes in the alternator that were causing the problems. Hopefully someone here will let you know how to replace them.
