Impressive fuel economy from my 2.3i at long last.

I reference this post from when I first got my Scorpio

http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=Problems;action= display;num=1098033545

I drove 100 miles Saturday evening. I drove from Orpington Kent around the M25 and down the M4 to Maidenhead in Berkshire.

I set the cruise control to 75 mph when I got on the M25. I set the trip computer to zero on both average speed and average economy.

There were two adults and a FULL tank of BP Ultimate. The tyres were all checked at 31 PSI

Appart from a small section of the M25 which makes you drop to 40 (again set on the cruise) there was not congestion...

The average fuel economy for 60 miles there was 36.7 MPG!!!!

I couldnt believe it!

On the way back I set cruise at 80 MPH and over the 120 miles the beast averaged 33.8 MPG.

It's taken me a while to get the car tip top but I think the new exhaust and the 97RON fuel has made a massive difference!

Phil that is amazing, both me and bertie run the 2.3, mine estate and his saloon, and I dont think wither of us has seen anything above very low 30's.

At times my 24v has given better mpg than the 2.3 Huh

So I am guessing it was worth the work to get sorted at last.

I quite agree I too get amazing consumption figures frommy lowly 12v considering its age and the now 'old technology'. That really is amazing but constant speed driving has always been a winner, and the use of the cleaner more expensive fuel as I have stated on more than one accasion does pay for itself in the long run ( sorry about the pun).. Keep it well serviced and I am sure it wil provide figures like this for a long time yet.

Well done.

Silly question but just how do you zero the average mpg readout, I have been trying on and off for months, I think there must be something wrong with my trip

you should be able to reset the computer by...
pressing the mode switch to the setting you require
then press the "r" button untill the reading is reset...

and phil,i now swear by the premium petrol in my 2.3,the smoother ride, better acceleration and improvement in the MPG stakes,IMHO make it well worth the extra...

you could also try pressing the s and the r button together at the same time, this sometimes works as well, failing that though, sounds like a "duffer",i did replace mine about 18 months ago,and the cost at the time was £33.87....

Dai

wiggle the R button whilst depressed side to side....sometimes works

what happens is the metal contacts oxerdise and need to be cleaned or rubbed together....if this does not work, that it apart, really simple, just prise it apart, watch for the 3 springs popping out, they fit in the buttons and give it a spring clean.

hope this helps

Re  not being able to reset the MPG.

Mine has suffered from this ever since I've had it. Mine can ge fixed by levering the button panel out and unplugging it. A bit of white spirit unter the switch contacts, a bit of energetic button pressing and reconnect.with a waggle. (Try a flourish if anyone is watching) and you're in with a chance. I guess there is a dry joint somewhere but my money is on a poor plug connection as this is the bit that seems to have most effect.

Ever since I got my scorp my trip wouldnt reset either.
The only way it seems to work is if I hold it down a few seconds then switch the car off for about an hour then. When I next switch on the needls all seem to dance and every thing is back to the reset mode.
The needls only dance when I press the reset button on my computer.
I know strange but true. Ive tried a "waggle" and this button and that infact all conbinations that I could think of over 6 months. The 1 hour thing only works for me.
Now that ive heard it can be taken apart and cleaned ill trie that.
I take it the front just pulls off towards the driver?
