Rattle,rattle.First thing in the morning!the rattle stays on longer and longer! Go on then, scare me,How long does it take and how muc£ will it cost to replace?

See the other thread about this. It's very common so don't panic!
Mine did it all through the winter really badly. Sounded like a transit van starting up. An oil filter with no non return valve can contribute to the chance of it happening.. i've put a new filter on mine and it's really helped it.
But errm. At the very worst, you'd either need the chain tensioners adjusting, or the chain replacing, which is what.. something like £500 at FMD, guys?

They can be replaced for new items but the chances are that the tensioning blades are by now lying in pieces in the sump.
There is a write up on the main site if you fancy doing it yourself - not a bad job for a weekend if you can get access to a proper ramp or a pit - some have done it on axle stands in their driveway but it's not recommended 
If the sprockets don't need replacing then aim for around £500 in parts - 2 new chains, 2 new tensioners, new tensioner blades and gaskets. Add a couple of hundred more if you need new sprockets.
It's about 8 hours for a garage to do it at whatever they charges these days per hour.

PS it will be a lot more trouble and expense if a chain snaps on you (spoken from experience!)

just in the process of doing one with a broken n/s chain, just spent £900.00 on parts alone, thats without the repairs to the head (re face,fitting new valves, re cutting seats), its a big job.

The std ford part is best bet.
Dont worry about the chain on a 2L,mines done 260K and doesnt rattle at all.

I don't like the sound of this mate. It all depends what you call a rattle. If it stops suddenly and completely then there's a good chance it's delayed oil circulation. My old granny did it for years and never got any worse - just don't rev it until it stops. I think the oil filter advice is a good place to start.
Kinda takes the mind off your steering problems dunnit.
Just a thought - you haven't a service or anything else done recently

I,ve found the way to stop it rattleing is when I first start it in the morning I keep my foot on the accelerater and turn the engine over for a second or two it doe,s not start , I then start the engine as normal no rattle, Now I no nowt about engines so I do not know if I am doing the engine an injustice but I feel sure someone will let me know.....

Hi, had to replace my chains, sprokets, guides, adjusters, etc. Fords estimate was about £1500 just for the chains, guides, & adjusters, & that was just working on the bare minium of parts. ( they would not give me a firm quote, i think they were fright to comit themseleves.) . I eventually found a performance car specialist 20 miles away who was willing to take the job on, & quoted £1250 . Parts bill was £800( a few extra hose pipes were changed, theres no point in not changing anything thats abit iffy while the motor is stripped down this far). He stuck to his quote £1250, but said he would never do another Scorpio 24v at that price again, I think he would add another £150 at least.( by the way when he stripped down all the guides etc. were lying in bits at the bottom, i had got by on a wing & a prayer without the timing chains slipping or jumping teeth). Sorry this is abit long winded

This ain't inspiring confidence chaps!
I go on holiday to Eire on saturday,the car is having a full service on thursday and hopefully there'll fit a new oil filter,shall i specify one with a none return valve?. This holiday is paramount to us.I thought I might be able to get them to do it while doing the service but by what you say it does'nt sound likely.thanks Ron for the concern! and thanks to you all for the (as ever)superb advice!  I've had granadas for ten years before the scorp,but it's the same blood,the same make!with a bit of luck we'll rattle and clang our way there,tour round for 1000 mile,and then rattle and clang our way back!The one thing these cars are is reliable

How loud are these rattles before they become serious. My 24v 150K has an intermittent rattle on cold start if you open the bonnet and listen. It cannot be heard inside the car and I couldn't hear it with the bonnet down. I am inbetween being concerned and leaving it, especially if some sound like a transit!!
Just as an aside for admin is it possible to put recorded noises on the site, I know it's probably difficult to calibrate them, one would have to try an relate them to other noises recorded at the same time
