Hi, I am a new member, with a recently bought and MOT'd 16V 2.0 1995 Ultima. was going ok, until I noticed O/D light started to flash, and autobox went from running smoothly, to jerky noisy changes and now no drive in D, but will still go , just , in 2 or 1. any help please?

First thing check fluid level ...engine warm and running slip through p to 1 and back again a couple of times, then put in p and check level ...engine still running.. fluid colour should be red and not smelling burnt.

Have you cleaned the MAF recently? http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cleanmaf.htm It does sound rather more serious than that but it's worth trying.

I sometimes had this on my N reg whenit was raining. Nothing for it but to get under and check the connection, I used grease after i cleaned it out. I also did a MAF clean to be on the safe side, and the problem was sorted. I would be starting here. nic

Jonno, The O/D light flashing is a signal that the EECV Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has detected a fault: if there is a possibility that the drivetrain can be endangered it can also limit the power developed by the engine to protect it - possibly why the performance is poor. see http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/odlight.htm As Nic says, this sort of error can be caused by poor connections - have you karchered the engine bay, at all? There is a multiplug on the nearside of the 'box that needs to be clean and dry. If the autobox fluid is a good red colour instead of brown and burnt smelling it may be that a solenoid is sticking - but realistically you need the Diagnostics Trouble Codes (DTCs) read - the O/D light flashing means that a code has been stored. If the autobox isn't shifting into 4th then I suspect there may be a P1761 codes at least. Put up your location and we'll see if a member with an OBD lead can meet with you and get the codes, see http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/obdindetail.htm.
