Question re A/C - R12

Here's a question for you guys.

I am bringing my Corvette back to the UK in June and it's airconditioning system is fitted with R12 which has just been serviced and topped up. I have 2 cans of original R12 in my possession.

Does anyone know exactly what the UK law is about R12?

Is it illegal to own 2 cans of original R12?

Can I service the AC with R12?

Here in the US it is still legal to purchase and own R12 but the servicing of the AC must be done by an EPA approved technician.

Many thanks

Are you back for good in June then Steve? If so are we likely to see you at Harewodd this year? You could always stick the Yankee car in the car park or get the Scorp off your old fella!!

Hi steve,

filling with R12 is now illegal in the uk but there is a very good substitude for the gas which is fine and available from ac companies suitable for all R12 models.

Cool! (pun intended)

OK, importing new R12 is a big nono but I can bring the car in and run it until the AC needs servicing and then I have to refill with something new (Freeze 12 or R134a).

The Corvette will be back in the UK by mid June so will be at the meets Smiley Test drives by appointment!

Yes thats completely legal.

When it needs recharging the ac company will get rid of the R12 for you and replace it with RS24.

http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/acrecharge.htm

For older systems, like Granadas (I know some members also own them as well), there is a substitute for the now-banned R12 refrigerant. This is called RS24, and Aircon Direct undertake this work. They can also convert an R12 system to 134a, but this is a bit more involved, needing the replacement of the receiver drier and some seals which may not be compatible - but you can contact them for good advice.

You will not be able to use R134a unless you have a retrofit which is not usually worth the effort.

LOL - join the line Smiley

I just learned something new today - in the late 80's GM got together with Lotus (GM owned them at the time) and Mercury Marine  (marine engines) to build a faster (375 hp) version of the Corvette, launched in 1990 and called the ZR-1. It had the same basic engine block, 5.7 litre V8 but Lotus designed the engines with quad cams, 32V heads and a few other special bits including a Variable Inlet Manifold system that opened up at 3500 rpm.

I wonder if Ford took any notice when developing the new Scorpio engine with Cosworth (direct rivels of Lotus for engineering design work)?

...maybe but I have never seen the 'valet switch' on the Cosworth as is installed on the ZR-1 Wink
Not that we get the chance to valet park like you guys do in the USA.
Hope you have at least treated your Vette to some Lingenfelter mods before you bring it back to Blighty!!
