idling prodlems

hi, i have a 2.3 which is causing me problems... it seems to drive all right, but when i take my foot off the throttle, it decides to rev up to between 2000 and 3000 revs. took it to my local garage, and he said, take it to someone with a computer, i dont understand it. He did a 5 min look under the bonnet, said, its not mechanical, its gotta be a sensor. SO, i tried to take it to "someone with a computer." Went to local bosch diagnostic centre, they said, we cant lok at it till the last week in May? Confused, i went to the next garage on my list... He said, the bosch centre only have a cheap error code reader, and they wouldnt know how to work it anyway? And, he wont be able to look at it for a month, cos he is far too busy?? I retired home for a cuppa, and decided to phone around... Ford, yes, we can do it at the end of next week, we are very busy, so we will only charge you 75 + vat ? Nobody else seems to be able to read codes so what am i to do? does anyone recognise the symptoms? anyone seen it before? car "sticks" at high revs, then drops down in stages, but doesent go under 12-1300 revs, as such, when you stop at traffic lights, your idling may be 3000... not what you want!! Oh, before someone asks.. its a manual gearbox, so i can control it a bit better! All replies and help appreciated I am so annoyed with the service of the garages, it seems like a licence to print money having a "computer"

The first thing to check would be the MAF. Sometimes a simple clean will solve this sort of problem. Suggest you go the 'Home' page scroll down to 'search' and enter MAF. That should give you advice on how to clean it. A simple task.HTH Simmo

hi there it does sound like a sensor, maybe the tps. you can check taht with a meter. i can't remember the voltage (5 volts?)but it should be a smooth curve up or down. while you're there give the throttle housing a clean. see http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=Problems;action= display;num=1104320107;start= also take the idle bypass valve off (2x8 or 10 mm bolts) and clean it out. i should say, do all of them with carb cleaner. hell, clean the MAF as well! you'll have them all off anyway! see how you get on with that.

Throttle position sensor. Look under search as suggested. All sorts of info but S Man will probably beat you to it with an answer.

thanks guys, am going to retreat to the garage in a few mins, so any fianl words of wisdom before i do will be appreciated. Sounds like a very good idea, to clean it all out, i took the air intake pipe off for a look, the throttle butterfly looked spotless from the air side, and i checked it was opening and closing ok, but i didnt look any further into the depths of the engine

Just to throw my thoughts in here... Before the Scorp I had a 2.0 litre MkIII Granada which had the exact symptoms as this. It would happily 'tick over' at 3000rpm. Cleaning the Idle Air Control Valve helped and I eventually replaced it with one out a scrapper which solved the problem completely. HTH

ok guys, i took the maf off, and cleaned it again, cleaned the air pipe to the throttle, cleaned the wee sensor in the air pipe, gave the throttle body as good a clean as i could, then took the air idle control valve off, and gave that a squirt too, stuck it all back together, and all seems the same, not much difference. any other ideas, most of the diagnostic garages here wont touch it, i had a mobile guy coming round today, who is a friend of a friend but when he heard it was a scorpio, he said, NO WAY, im not doing that, its too complicated surely its just a matter of reading off some codes? I really cant afford to take it to ford, HELP!!

my guess is the good old idle speed control valve needs a good clean. quite a common problem on all of henry's finest. granada's seem to have more than their fair share though! dont ask how i know! too much time spent, and too little patience left!

Idle air valve, if cleaning it doesnt fix it then it may be duff. If you remove it but leave it connected electrically, block off the hole left on the throttle body. Start the car on a light throttle, (get someone else to to do this while you watch the control valve workings), then release the throttle, the idle valve should open to compensate, not much . Then have all electrical bits, heater fan max, headlights, windscreen deicers etc. More movement can (should) be coaxed out of the valve. Have good look at all the various vacuum pipes for leaks etc. eddie

air valve seems sticky, although there is enough spring on it, i think that is probably the problem.will try and get another one to test it before i buy a new one cant find any leaks in any air pipes, etc, and dont see any movement when i try the throttle test.
