Brake dust on wheels

Hi everyone, not a major problem but more of an observation, every car i have ever owned has allways accumulated a lot more brake dust on the front wheels than the rears, obviously the fronts are bigger and do more work, the past few weeks it seems the rears are getting 2 or 3 times as much as the front, pedal feel is o.k and braking seems fine, do differant types of pads give off more dust than others. visual check of pads look fine, any ideas ?       thanks Ian.  96 2.0 16v

gets me as well, makes the wheels look so ugly, and if not cleaned regularly, can be a mare to get off sometimes, but there are after market fitments that you put behind the wheels that are supposed to stop all this, and on that topic, the garage i regularly use are in the process of now supplying wheels and tyres, and apparently there are some excellent new ones just coming onto the market, watch this space, and after someone i know gives them a trial,i will post back the results......

Have read somewhere that attatchments to stop break dust getting on wheels can dissrupt air flow over the disk and calipers leading to disks warping.....don't know if it's true.
If you are getting more dust on rears than front are you sure you haven't got binding rear calipers or hand brake cable/linkage

David and Craig hi , have tried disc covers many years ago, they looked like "black frisbee`s that had been in an oven ie squashy rubber and found they looked horrible and did not work particually well. Maybee the newer ones are better. Handbrake seems free wheel spins when brake is off, i was wondering if the pads get softer after they have worn to a certain point or something ? cheers .. Ian

My brother had these 'wheel clean discs' some time ago on a Cortina Ghia.  As I remember, they worked really well. The wheels had lots less brake dust on than before.
He never encountered discs warping or anything, but I guess they could have interrupted air-flow  Undecided
Do they still produce these things?

As the  split  is  roughly  35% rear brake    65%  Front brake  I'd expect  more dust  on the front  wheels.

A  high pressure  car wash  usually  gets rid of most of it.

i will find out more in a week or so,the garage has a rep coming in and apparently these new one's are "the dogs",obviously will report back what they look like, but will have to wait a month or so to see how they perform, the boss is blagging a set for "investigational purposes"......

problem was rife on the old mk 3 granadas due to rear brakes binding. was a design fault, and cured by fitting of 2 'valves' into the rear brake lines at the abs unit. was standard on later models. rear brakes used to smoke when descending very long/steep hills!!!
not noticed this on my 1997 2.3 ultima though, guess ford 'cured' the problem.........well hope so. despite the rear brakes working fine on mine, i still seem to get more dust on the rears than the front. must be due to aif-flow i guess. just had all wheels refurbished, and im pi**ed off with the way they look after a week or to. bring out the pressure washer!
