Hi everyone Sorry to dredge this up again but I'm driving myself barmy. Please can anyone help It's time for an oil change and I am now discovering despite what it says in the handbook (taking into account it is many years old) that the best oil for the Cosworth would be a 5-30W part-synthetic can this right . This was confirmed by a local Ford dealer and here: (please use the box labelled- Tools - Which oil should I use? and select the appropriate vehicle - Sorry no direct link) http://www.castrol.com/castrol/sectiongenericarticle.do?categoryId=82915 272&contentId=6008622 see if you can understand the notes listed below. If I was to change to this spec. I was considering coming away from Magnatec and additive based oils (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/snakeoil.htm) to a more straight forward one LOL has anyone ever used Shell as I am having a hard time to find a reputable oil with this specification. Any comments as always most gratefully recieved Thanks OddJob

Comma do a very good synthetic oil. and it is relatively cheap compared with the others. Caterham cars use it in all their vehicles. But it really is a personal choice, I use their semi synthetic in my 12v and always have done.

We've always used the Magnatec fully synthetic and no complaints at this end. Bottom line is that I've never heard of engine wear being caused by using any premium brand of oil - only when the oil is not changed on a regular basis. The snakeoil article was targetted at the 'magic additives' sold at Halfords etc and not at premium branded oils. I think the recommendation of a semi-synthetic was when the synthetics were just appearing and not as stable as they are today.

I've decided not to go with 5-30W (recomanded by ford), so i choosed 5-40W (Valvoline Syn-Power) full synthetic for my 2.3 DOHC (this engine is getting to hot for a 30 rating).
