Just for the record, my car, as you may recognize: Ford Scorpio 2.3i 16V estate car, manufactured in late 1996. Looks like the thing needs new shock absorbers now -- the guy in my garage just told me that, as the two absorbers that are at the rear have some kind of special "pressure-adjustment-thing" and thus are expensive. Well, he would charge me a whole 380 EUR per absorber, that would mean about 760E for both of them. Do I really need those hi-tech god-knows-what-hell-expensive shock absorbers? What is so special about the Scorpio?

sounds like you have self levelling suspension on that car,i am led to believe that if you dont tow anything,or carry large heavy loads on a regular basis,you can hve normal shockers installed instead.... others will know more about this though....
