Keys - How many?

Been looking a scorpio at auction was about to make an offer but key refused to turn in ignition barrel. Also only 1 key (black) and 1 remote fob were with the car and the key only locked the doors and wouldn't open them. It is a 1996 cosworth. How many keys should there be and it is a big deal to change the lock barrel? TIA Geoff- Disappointed Newbie

most ford key will lock most ford cars, but will not for obvious reasons unlock them, what you should have with these cars is as follows 1x red master key,2x black keys (with the red dots on them),and USUALLY 1x remote fob........ sounds like the wrong keys were with that car to me

Thanks guys for your advice. The 1 and only key worked fine yesterday but today only after a lot of juggling could the manager get it to turn, I struggled for 20 minutes with only 2 successes so the key must be the correct one. Perhaps it is worn although looked in good nick. However, if I wanted to get another made there's no master so how is it done and if it turns the ignition lock why doesn't it turn the door locks unless these have been changed at some time?

If you need a new master then go here http://www.home-own.co.uk/ala/ a lot lot cheaper than the Ford Main dealers but do the same job. Some like my local guy comes to the hose and does it all there. My last visit was £60 for a new RED master and two keys

My key was doing the same thing in the ignition, I thought about getting new keys done (I have a new red master key which turns the barrel fine, but it isn't programmed) But I went for the ignition barrel change first. Parts cost me £13 from Ford, Circlip pliers cost me £7 from Motorworld, and the job took me half an hour last night, thanks to the great guide from Simon C on this site. The same black key that sometimes just wouldn't turn the old barrel turns the new one with ease! I think the answer is that yes, the key may be a little worn, but the barrels will be a lot more worn. I'd replace the barrel first. Quick, easy, cheap job to start with! All the locks can be done on the same principle, so maybe get the kit for one of the doors if the ignition barrel one works and see how it goes...
