Sun Roof Problem
« on: Jul 1st, 2005, 12:27am »

I have read some of the previous posts regarding corrosion of the metal that holds the rubber seal to the rear of the sunroof causing the seal to lift thus preventing the sunroof opening .

Mine is in a similar state, it will tilt but not slide and I was wondering whether other models such as Mondeos have the same size glass panel as a scrapyard local to me has quite a few and also some pre 1994 old Scorpio/Granadas as well. It would be cheaper, if the whole panel is in good condtion, to fit one from these cars as opposed to buying a new seal and hoping to derust the frame of the old one.

All comments greatfully accepted on this.

Not 100% about the Mondeo roof, but I'm fairly certain that the Granada roof panel is the same size as the Scorpio one. Just a different pattern (the black dotted area) printed on it.

So Andrew what was stopping it when we looked at Harewood? As I was not aware that you did fix it there.

hi dave

in the end, nothing! Undecided we dropped the motor again and man handled the glass back enough to reveal the control cables. out with the spray grease and slid it shut. re-fitted the motor and it began working slowly. just a case of moving it backwards and forwards while working in the grease. we managed to get it working just in time for the rain! Grin

oh, i should add that geoff thought the control cable on the drivers side was siezed a bit, so maybe that why it wouldn't work the first time. we must have moved it enough to get a bit of grease on it. again we did use quite a bit of spray grease on it. Huh

Andrew glad to hear it is still all running smoothly. Must admit really enjoyed having an open roof this week.

Had another long run down to Reading Yesterday and drove back up tonight computer indicates 31.4 so still very happy with that cleaning that you did on the throttle body.

Further to my original post, I went to my local scrapyard today. 1st I measured the size of the glass panel on the Scorpio. It is 18" x 33". The mondeo is smaller at approx 32" same as an escort.

I found a previous model scorpio with correct size panel, got the motor off but I couldn't get the glass out without the whole mechanism so I took that as well.

The glass is in good nick with no apparent rusting at the seal joint. My only question now is how do I separate the panel from this old mechanism? I presume removing the rotten one will be the same?

TIA

To remove the sunroof complete with its mechanism, follow the instructions found in the the Ford technical guides on the main web site at http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/manual/body/closures/slideroof.pdf.

After examining the sunroof panel and mechanism removal is as follows:

1. Fully raise the sunroof panel to the tilted position.
2. Remove the three anterior screws that pass thro' the internal black frame.
3. Remove the 3 large black screws down each side of the glass panel that hold the panel to the mechanism (screws are located where there is a dropped area in the internal black frame).
4. Push upwards and carefully withdraw the glass panel.
5. Refitting is the reverse of the above.

My problem so far is getting the front-most screw of the side screws out as it has seized. I've put plenty of WD40 and 3-in-1 oil on it and I hope after a day or so it will free up ( I don't want to use any heat on it for fear of cracking the glass) and that I don't have a similar problem removing the glas panel from the car itself!

Hope this description will be of help to other owners. Sorry I don't have any pictures-I don't have a digital camera.

Just to report I finally did the sunroof. Took a lot longer than expected due to problems on the way but I got there in the end.

All is working fine a perfect fit and I oiled all the mechanism well at the same time.

Incidentally, the old sunroof panel was very badly rusted not only under the rubber seal but at various places around the frame as well so I had to vac out the roof recess to clear all the debris. The replacement, from a previous model Scorpio is virtually rust free. Ford must have used lower quality steel on the newer model!!

Geoff,

I have noticed a lot of the later Scorpios suffer from the rusty joint at the back of the sunroof which gets so bad on some cars that the roof wont open when it drops to retract into the roof.

The early Granadas always seem to be a lot better and I would agree with your assumptions about the quality of materials!!
