Cooling fans stuck on!

Hi guys,

Problem!

1996 2.9 12v

Going to France tomorrow. Out in car yesterday - everything was fine. Went out to car this morning to take it around the back of the house for a wash, and the battery was completely dead. Thought it may have been the radio, which doesnt click off properly everytime, but I know that it only stays on for an hour with the ignition switched off.

So turned my van around to jump start it, connected the leads, and the cooling fans started up right away. Started okay, but hazard lights were flashing (although they werent switched on). Continued to flash for about ten minutes and then just stopped. Ran the car around and switched off. Five minutes later, fans are still running, so have temporarily disconnected them from the plug nearby whilst I get your advice, which I need desperately. I cant risk this happening while we're away.

Cheers, Tony

I feared this on Craig. Heavy rain last night, no battery cover! I have checked though and all appears dry and drainage is fine. Is it easy to remove and check?

hmmm...

alan, once water is in the fusebox,it really is a case of at least trying to dry out best you can with a hairdrier for example,or taking it apart, have a look....

hi tony,i have had lots of problems with electrics etc, no indicators, head lights, wipers going on when headlights switched off have rebuilt both fuseboxes with no luck found out yesterday that the wiring harnes has cracked up down by the steering under the servo,so check around this area to see if yours is cracked aswell, and sometimes the rad fans have run .now looking into wiring harnes change.

Have checked fusebox next to battery, which is where I thought the problem would lie (what with the battery cover missing etc) anyway that seemed fine.

Thought I'd best check the main fusebox, and there are signs of water there! Lots of leaf and soil  debri clogging up the drain holes too, so have cleared those, and removed as much muck as I could with a vacuum cleaner. All the drain holes are clear now. Will have to hope and pray that it will dry up in the heat from the engine, and the warmth of France,  and sort itself whilst I'm away. As I temporary measure, I have rigged a switch to the fan so I can switch it off from inside the car when I stop, so it doesn't drain the battery.

I'm sure it'll be fine....... Undecided That's my optimistic side shining through Grin
