Hi,
I am a newbie to this site and in need of some help
I have just purchased a ford Scorpio 2.3 Ultima P reg as a replacement for my stolen pre bug eyed Scorpio and have unfortunately bought a lot of trouble. The gearbox hesitates when it is changing gears and sometimes slams into gear very hard.
I have had it scanned and the codes read P0734 Gear 4 Incorrect Ratio. P1761 Shift Solenoid C Performance.
I have looked up on the site and found the listings and have been told that I need a new gear box, total £850 Inc Vat.
Can anyone who has had these error codes please let me know if this is true or if there is something I can check before the car goes in on Monday.

Now for my next problem the ABS light stays on and the error code is C1095 ABS Hydraulic Pump Motor Circuit Failure. I have checked and cleaned the wiring and placed a meter across the sensors but the light still stays on.

I will be replacing the pump/modulator over the weekend but I don’t know if the light will clear itself after self test or do I have to have the code cleared by scanning again.

Any thoughts are appreciated
Darren

With regards the ABS light it is well worth checking ALL the connections the front ones ub=nder the front wheel arch are IMV the best place to start. take them apart and clean with contact cleaner and reasemble.. I would also recommend cleaning the MAF and see if that cures some of the problems ( http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cleanmaf.htm ) Then drive the car see if there is any difference and repost. I am sure there is soemone close to you who has OBD facilities and could do a scan for you or go to ne of the meets . But Others know more about OBD codes than ME

I'm sure you'll  have checked the level and the colour of the gearbox  fluid ?

What's the mileage on the box, I've  heard  people say that they've  got  150 000   on their  unit  and it doesn't give any trouble, but I think they are the exception.

I'm sure this will be the death of my gearbox but mine is just coming up to the 100,000 mile mark with no problems whatsoever. Oh, why did I say that  Embarassed

Hi there
No help to you now but I have always changed the auto oil on all cars owned every 10K, by removing the sump, cleaning and replacing filter. Not a complete oil change but you get 50% out each time. Some cars sold on have continued this with by the next owner, with very high miles and no problems. One Renualt 25 (V6) managed over 250k and then passed away in an accident.

2.3 Ultima takes about 1hr to do & Dexron 3 is cheap.

p.s engine oil & filter changed at 3k, without fail

hi again.
thanks for the replies.
the gearbox oil was clean but dosn't smell burnt.
the gearbox has done 130,000.
i think that even if their was something other than the gearbox that was causing this problem i would need to change it soon.
thanks again

Darren,
That is exactly the problem with mine after 115K miles.  See my Running Costs page on http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/servicenew.htm
They are identical symptoms and DTCs.

In my case it was probably due to a slight leak between the autobox fluid and the coolant inside the radiator, putting water into the gearbox that damaged the drive bands.  If your fluid isn't burnt or gungy it is probably that the drive bands have run out of friction material - they don't last forever.

£850 is about the mark for a recon exchange box - but do be sure that they are a reputable company and that the box is actually reconditioned rather than just cleaned up out of a scrapper.  Wink

Hi Eric
Thanks for replying. I have already read your article about the running cost and found it very entertaining and informative.
My mechanic has checked the Scorpio and has found a water leak but cannot see where it is originating from.
He suspects its coming from behind the flywheel.
The plan is that when the auto box company removes the auto box he will go and repair whatever is causing it.
Save him having to take out the box later to repair as I need the car in a weeks time for our holidar to Center Parks, longlet, with the kids.
Is this the same problem as your Cosworth
Thanks

Darren,
I think your guy is thinking of the core plug, in the engine block in front of the flywheel/driveplate.  This would not cause problems with the gearbox, but just swirl about inside the bellhousing.

On our automatics a section of the engine coolant radiator is set aside for autobox fluid - small pipes are connected to the coolant rad on the nearside, the top one just under the top radiator hose.  My gearbox specialist found that the inside of my autobox was rusty and the fluid gungey, and the friction material separating from the brake bands.  He reckoned that the coolant was getting into the fluid through the coolant radiator, so I had that changed too.

hi just collected my car  after having the gearbox reconditioned, runs great. Havent replaced the ABS pump as i am unable to find one local. the engineer had a look for a water leak ,found a small leak on a elbow joint going into the waterpump. he checked the small pipes  that are connected to the coolant rad, thay are clean and no signs of rust. everthing is a1 except the ABS but i have listed that problem on another post.
thanks for the replies and if anyone needs a Autogearbox Specialist in london then private message me and i will send you their No. and Address

Caspa,
That's great news.  Glad it wasnt as bad as mine, because the rad was expensive!
If you PM me with the details of the autobox specialist I'll add it to the Dealers page.

Thanks.
