Hello all .. my handbrake on the 2.3scorpio is not working ? The handbrake lever in the car is or seems ok , just clicks 2-3 times when pulled up , but does not stop the car from rolling on a flat or hill surface , i have to park the car in 1st gear to stop it rolling ...any ideas as to what the problem is ?? Brake fluid is fine to the full mark.

Sounds like the rear callipers are not working properly! It has handbrake callipers on it, and the linkage on the calliper has a tendancey of sticking. Get someone to operate the handbrake, and when it is released, the linkage should return to the stop on the calliper! If it doesn't, try pushing it to the stop psition. If it is sticking, the calliper/s will need to be removed and freed off.

Sorry to say I needed a new caliper for this reason. It was the drivers side caliper, and no amount of cajoling would make it work correctly. Apparently the bottom of the operating rod gets rusted/worn. The flat at the bottom hasnt got enough reach to push the spigot up behind the piston. I was able to make it work by hand, i.e. putting a piece of pipe on the lever and operating it that way but the cable wasnt able to get that much pull before the other side took up the tension. I had the same problem on my old Granada,at the time replacement internal parts were available for the caliper and I was able to renew the worn bits. Does anyone have an exploded diagram of the caliper ?? eddie

I reconditioned mine got mine to work some months ago. However, these handbrake mechanisms are starting to pack up again Unfortunately, I think the long term solution is replacement calipers. I'm going to have to go for another temporary repair before I replace mine. The problem bit is the swivelly thing just underneath these springs. They begin to corrode and... well... don't swivel any more

hmmm, nothing new there then! I've replaced (too many) rear calipers on granadas and scorpios because of the bl**dy things seizing up!! my own 2.3 ultima (97) has had the same problem, works ok for a while if freed off, but will return eventually (usually for the mot!) a new caliper is the only real answer.........sorry!

Ash, The internal brake piston adjuster can also corrode. It is in a bath of hygroscopic brake fluid, so the water content rusts the internal adjuster. For this reason the brake system should be bled through with new fluid every 2 years.
