i had exactly the same symptoms on my 2.3 ultima. was down to the usual dodgy wiring to the coils packs (fuel cut off loom). please double check the feed wires to the coils packs to ensure that there are no signs of damage to the insulation, or to the wiring itself. good luck.

hi there also check the pipework to the EGR valve. try running the car with the small vac pipe dis-connected and blocked. see if that helps any.

hi joe all the egr valves are the same, only the pipework/position is different. have you had a obd-2 scan done? maybe the lambda sensor has failed. a scan would reveal all. hth

hi there i wonder if what you think is a mis-fire is the a/c compressor kicking in and is seizing a bit? put a post in the obd section and see if there is someone local to you. something seems to have happened, though. overheated? a scan would definately help.

have you checked the coil packs to the spark plug? look at spark plug for tracking marks.......thin black lines. Coil packs are prone to cracking thus causing mis fires.

had mine checked at work using the snap on mk 2 gizmo. not a flaming thing showing! only spotted damaged wiring when changing plugs in an attempt to cure it! lambda sensor is needed! exhaust gas readings will be well out of spec if not!! normal mot testing equipment will do.
