Nasty Noise

My 97 2.9 24v Cossie started making a deep tapping noise from the top of the l/h bank,sounds like a noisey tappet.the noise is not always there,engine revs ok,oil is clean,never looses oil/water,never overheats.can be heard mainly at idle.I removed the cam cover,no broken valve springs,no cam damage,from what i can see the timing chain is in good condition as are the guides.removed plugs ( not easy as some Twonk must have used a 6ft. bar to tighten them ) plugs are black and gap was 3mm so i guess nobody has changed them in a long while, i spun the engine over with the plugs out ,plenty of oil to the cams, i dont fancy romoving the cams to check the hydrulic followers as the timing chain will open another can of worms or can it be done without taking the heads offHuh any thoughts gentlemen, I thought about suiside but that seems harsh!

I had this on my last S reg Cosworth. Believe it or not, it turned out to be the alternator bearing!! I gave it a good service with a bit of oil and it was fine.
 
To me (I was paranoid about chains etc.) it sounded just like you would expect a tappet or a rattling chain to sound. My helpful mechanic found it in the end!!
 
Check it and see!

I listened to the alternator using my version of a stethocope ( 24" of broomhandle ) they didn't sound noisy but i will remove the drive belt and give it a quick run to double check. The noise seems to be at the rear half of the cam cover, but alloy cam covers can enhance sound.I will let you know tomorrow how I get on.

check things like blown exhaust manifold gaskect, they can sound a bit like a tappet, also have come accross a broken cam bearing cap bolt on a 24v, heavey tappet noise.

Yes I have , it ran fine to 2xlimit+10, the 3mm gap would make it run slightly retarded.... I havent had the car for very long ( 2 months ),when I bought it I knew there were a few faults ie. water leaking into both o/s/f & n/s/f footwells, ( a/c out without disconecting it, full dash out to replace the heater matrix £5.00) leaks cured ! new f & r discs/pads £145.00, repair multi cd player ( broken wire ) bodywork is perfect , the car only cost me £600. I could do without the nasty noise/rattle .its not the alternator,camshaft bearing Ive got a nagging feeling its either a little end or timing chain.. anybody know if the chain can be changed without taking the heads off Huh

the cosworth has two timing chains and it is a major job and if done professionally would cost a lot more than you paid for the car!! I believe that those who have done the job on here have paid in excess of £600 just for the parts. There is a page on the main site which details the required parts as well as the costs involved

thanks Baz, before I was disabled with Acute Rhumatoid Arthritus my choosen line of employment was as a mechanic/m.o.t. tester ( nobody will talk to me now ) I also own a Sierra XR4X4 2.0Lt twincam,that was in a sorry state when I got it, new full sills,rear wheel arches , cracked head (the car not me)now it looks and sounds like new.it takes me a long time because i've only got a thum and finger on each hand that work,the other fingers are there but don't work,but i love repairing my cars.parts are not a problem as i get 30% discount.sorry to waffle on, i'l go and kick/mend the car now ..... kimi

Well the timming chains I think first then the hydrulic followers would be my next guess.
Also worth checking first the dummy distrubter drive, it has a bearing that often fails due to a poor oil feed design that can make all kinds of funny noises. Recently I came across the same symptoms to find the rod bolts had come loose, the shells had started to ride up on each other causing the piston to just hit the head.
Came & went, it was a real mystery for a week, sounded just like a loose tappet. I hope it is not that but if all else checks out it could be. Good luck.
I doubt if it's the small end as I have never heard of it failing?

Thanks to everyone who answered.... I have found it,I  know its not nice to usr naughty words so I won't you can use your imagination..... the nasty noise was the o/s cat, the sound traveled up the exhaust pipe to the head and with it being an alloy head & alloy cam cover it amplified and moved ( if thats the right word )the sound to appear that it was coming from a different sorce. I hope that makes sence,it does to me.. so thanks again... kimi...

Hi Guys
this sounds like the nasty noise that my cossy has started making, i too am paranoid about the chains. I have been told to try Wynns hydraulic flush because a friend thought it was a lifter, after reading this i think i'll investigate the cat first then look at the lifters and as a last resort i'll have to drop the sump and take a look at the big ends

Hi Guys
started looking at the beast today and decided to take the sump off first as the noise seemed to be comming from the bottom end, No. 1 big end shells are shot ! the cranks looks fine so i'm going to try a pair of shells and see if this cures the problem, wish me luck

PS also found the cause of my oil leak, the front crank oil seal came off in two ! thats not so good...........but easily fixed

Dean... Do you not think that while you've got the sump off you should check and replace all B/E shells. But the bigger question is why have they gone,especially if it is only one rodHuh I should investergate ... oil pump,oil pressure,oil filter,oil leaks. Also the oil goes to the main bearings first and if these are worn you will loose pressure to the big ends,which will then wear out...I'd be very interested to hear how you get on....Kimi...
