2.3 autobox faulty gear selection

I have what appears to be a common fault with my autobox in that occassionaly whilst driving the box changes gear then appears to select neutral the drops back into gear (without gear stick moving) There's no rhyme or reason for it either. the cars not driven hard at all and has covered 65k only! I'm going to try the MAF cleaning suggestion tomorrow that i've seen on another post and I'll let you know what happens.

Ok I'll give it a go. Is it quite easy to see once the covers removed?

I cleaned the maf the other day and the car ran sweet as a nut for a day or two but then it did the same thing again. I've yet to try the second thing with the TR sensor. Will keep you posted.

Had much the same problem a while ago, it turned out to be the oil seal had failed behind the selector (pringl) box causing it to become contaminated. Symptoms, intermittent slipping out of drive into neutral or low gear, slowly becoming more frequent over a month or so,. later harsh and / or incorrect timing on gear changes. New selector box was fitted at a cost of just over £300. It can damage the box so fault needs to be fixed quickly. Check for swarf in the box, change oil if necessary

Cheers for that steve. Does sound like you had the same problem I have. I'll look into getting the selector box changed. BTW did you change yours yourself?

Mick, Before you commit yourself to a particular thing, have you had the OBD codes read? Is the speedo a bit erratic, perhaps? If it is then it would be the VSS faulty rather than the TR sensor and would be a lot cheaper to fix. If either are faulty they would record a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) - perhaps you could ask to meet with an OBD equipped owner and have them checked first. The problem might also be sticking solenoids. Have a look through http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/autogearbox.htm and see if that helps.

I don't think the selector box is a DIY job, I believe it may require the lowering of the box to gain access, then it needs specialist setting up on re-fitting. If you have tried everything else and the problem persists then I would suggest having a specialist diagnose the problem before proceeding. I take it the oil level is fine?

Steve, The oil level is fine..it's the right colour too! I'm gonna try and arrange to meet with eric and have him plug his box of tricks into the old girl to hopefully diagnose it.
