Remote Locking

Hi all. I hope I'm doing this right? Please advise me if I'm not.
I've only been a member a few days and had my '96 Cossie for just over a week. This site's as good as the car. Thank you to all involved in the administration etc for your hard work; it's fantastic!!

The buttons on the remote that came with my car seemed a bit "iffy" and as I've spent a long time working in electronics and general IT I thought I'd check the sites recommendations and clean up the contacts, give it new batteries etc.

Angry It wasn't broke; I shouldn’t have tried to fix it!!  Sad

No matter how many times I try to adjust to spring clip connection or re-position the batteries and go and sit in the car to try and re-program it, I can't get it to function.

I think it must be permanently broken; that might be an understatement!

Embarassed  So now I'm looking for help and advice.

Is there anything else I can do to test whether it is BER (beyond economical repair)??

If I need a replacement, do I have to get one with exactly the same numbers on the back??

Does anyone have one that I don't have to take a mortgage out to buy?

Thanks in advance.

Don't give up on the one you've got.    To start off with,  are the batteries new and have you got 'em in the right way up?

Re-programming   the remote  is  ( meant to be )  very simple,  turn the ignition to position 1,    press  the  UNLOCK  button  ( or is  it the  LOCK  button ?    I'll get me coat !  ) either way  you  should   get  one acknowledgement  chime   from  the computer,  take out the ignition key  and  try  out the remote.

I think thats the procedure from the handbook which doesnt work.

Try this
http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/remote.htm

Are you getting the first chime while programming?

Its basically turning the key to the 1 position 5 times and on the 5th time leaving it there,(this is where it should chime)
press the UNLOCK key on the remote then turn the ignition off
Second chime should confirm programming has worked

its not too clear on the site, I know someone recently read it as turning the key four times.

You need to wait a few seconds between each turn of the key during programming,
I found about 5 seconds worked for me, if its too fast it doesnt work.

Failing that and youve checked the batteries etc see if you can meet up with another member and try theirs.

Since reading this thread I have been trying to get my remotes working but with no luck  Sad

I have only had my Scorpio for a few weeks so am still working on it sorting a few things out. It came with 2 remotes, 1 now has new batterys and the batterys in the other are good. I have been through all the turning on to No 1 position etc but the thing I have noticed is that I am not getting the chime after leaving it on for the 5th time. Has anyone any ideas?

Cheers Mike.

Have you tried the old way as per the handbook?

not as per the site. It works with very early cars and the remotes but you can only programme one that way.

They changed the remotes early 96 or was it late memory problems but one or other should work .

Does the chime workHuh? say when you leave the lights on and open the door.

No I haven't mate, I can't remember seeing anything in the book about it. I will have another look as that may well be the problem because my Scorp is a 1995

Cheers Snoopy.

Yes it should have a remote and yes you can still buy them.  I think they are about £75 from a dealer but they often appear on ebay as well.  Programming is very easy when you get the knack.

Grin Thanks to everyone who has posted replies, especially Snoopy.

With a little patience with the +ve terminal, some work with silver foil and a decent adhesive (Blue Peter style) and most importantly discarding all the advice from almost everywhere that told me to ignore the re-programming instructions in the handbook because they are wrong.
The instructions in the handbook were right!

Special thanks to Snoopy for that information.
I read so much about NOT doing it the way it describes in the handbook that; I never did.

All is well and I’m relieved that I’ve not destroyed £££’s worth of equipment.

Now for the ABS/TCS lights  . . . Anyone got a heads up on this one? I’ll start by trawling the past posts, advice, etc.

Thank again all  Smiley
