ABS Problems

Hi guys,

Pretty desperate now. Car is 15 days on the road without tax as I've not had a chance to deal with the ABS problem until today!!

Quick recap! ABS light on constant. Well intentioned friend with multimeter tests sensors, tells me two front sensors faulty!!! Well, I bought two new at £140, fitted them one at a time due to the amount of time involved - had to drill the old ones out and it took a while.

ABS light still on!!

Later find out that multimeter is faulty (£140 down the drain.) Sad

Presume must be a rear sensor, so get one just in case off howied for £11 - thanks Dave. Spent today checking, one had corroded pinsunder the seat where something had been spilt in the past so replaced with spare from howied. Checked other side, both resistances similar so seems okay. Startup test passed okay, but ABS light still comes on at low speed as something fails the test. Now I know this indicates a sensor failing a test, so I then removed the other rear sensor just in case and replaced it with the one I'd removed from the other side. Again the resistance was comparable.

Same result. Passes start up test, ABS light comes on at low speed.

Then went around all four sensors checking connections, and making sure there wasn't anything blocking the sensors - nothing!

Where do I go next? Huh

Need your help pdq before I end up with a fine!! I really need to get this in for an MOT this week.

Thanks again guys,

Tony

hi there

have you worked through the faults page?

as stated there, check the hubs (wheel bearings) and tyre prssures, etc.

Thanks Andrew, been there done that.

Did replace NSR wheel bearing, which I originally thought might have been the source of the problem - not to be though!

Checked and adjusted tyre pressures today!

Cheers,

Tony

Sorry to hear you have not sorted it yet.

Firstly mate you say the light only comes on when you go over 10 mph (approx).
Well your main worry is the M.O.T so I would take it & see how you get on. Most garages will not pick-up a fault like that unless you tell them. They should take the car for a spin but few do unless they have some spare time. Make sure the hand brake is good & they might not even bother checking the brakes on the rollers either. Try to drive it into the garage if they let you.
The brakes must be addressed thou & I would say you might have to go the whole hog & clean the splines on the shafts as well as the sensors.
Recently I fitted 4 new sensors to a car + 4 new driveshafts (yes it's a 4x4) only to have the same fault as yours, I removed & refitted all 4 sensors, fault gone. Strange?
Double check that all is clean & that conections are good on all sensors before you decide to replace anything else.

Goodluck.

Thanks again Dave. I'll get it in for an MOT this week and see how it goes.

Heres hoping!
