Removed key, instrument panel still on

Hi guys, I'm new so bear with me.
Took the keys out of my car on Wednesday and the instrument panel stayed on. There was no power to the radio. (my car is an N reg 2.9 12v). I managed to get it to go off by turning the key a few times. But lo and behold, 6 hours later and the car was as dead as can be. (Not good when you work 25 miles from home!) I took the battery home and charged it up. Next day the car started first time - great. I went back to check it and hour later and the instrument panel was back on. On starting, the starter would turn but that was it. I fiddled with a few knobs and the panel went off when I turned the heater switch. The wiring behind the switch looks ok.
I have looked in the fuse boxes and they look dry (gave them a little WD40 just for good measure). I have a battery cover fitted.

Any more I can look at - have some mechanical knowledge but no electrical.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Hi and welcome,

Damp can get under the fuse boxes as well. Old leaves etc. get stuck under there and hold the damp.
This can be the cause of a lot of problems and is worth checking.
Careful inspection and if possible dry out with a hair dryer or similar may help.
Remember thae wiring is reknown for problems so be gentle!!!!
Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Chris.

Just a quick question. Should any of my relays be warm/hot to the touch when the key is out? R5 (main box) and R16 (Batteryside box) are hot to the touch

hi there

doesn't sound right. i'd strip the fuseboxes, as it looks like they are to blame. they are layed, so are hard to dry out without taking them apart.

Details of the fuses and relays are on pages 130-134 here.http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/handbook.htm. R5 is the heated rear screen and R16 is the Battery saver relay.Could it be the rear screen heater switch ? as you say that 'playing' with a few switches in that area seemed to affect the situation.
