2.0 16v Auto Box - Shift Solenoid No. 3

Still at it.. My '95 2.0 16v (78k miles) auto won't shift up to 4th. No problem around town - a pain on the motorway (including fuel consumption!). An OBD check gives the following message -> "P1761 Shift Solenoid No. 3 Performance" I am also getting P0135, P0138 and P1131 O2 sensor codes - probably related to my slight manifold leak (I get an exhaust smell in the cabin on engine start). For the auto problem, I suspect a sticking solenoid - anything I can try other than a costly auto-box rebuild? I've bought a can of Wynn's Automatic Transmission Treatment product - worth a shot I guess. CS

I checked and cleaned the MAF some months ago - clean as a whistle! - but no result. The gearbox oil appears relatively clean and the box is normal in operation - except for the non-shift from 3rd to 4th.. I've asked various mechanics and apprarently it's a major job (drain, sump off etc.) to get at the shift solenoids. At least that's what I've been told. I was hoping for an alternative to an autobox recon. Thanks CS

Thanks Scorpio_man! you must deserve a comendation for support! thanks I've read all the site material .. if the MAF doesn't fix it you're on you're own.. ah well, a recon auto is worth more than the car... and i'm not doing that.. but I hate to give up..perhaps I'll get lucky with a spanner - in other words I'll never see 4th gear again.. Thanks for all the help Scorpio_man. Now, where did I put that match? An Australian that should have known better...
