Incorrect Wiring (On Purpose)

Hi all,

Bought my current Scorpio about 18 months ago when unfortunately i was not too mechanically skilled and was thus ripped off.

e.g. The Head Gasket was gone but the owner was clever enough to drain cooling system of oil and clean it up. Also he wired up the air blower inside the car to turn on the engine fans...

So I turn on the internal air blower and within 10 seconds the engine overheating fans come on....

Problem is I now have a new engine and no longer have any over heat problems but cannot find where he might have cheated the wiring e.t.c

Any ideas will be much appreciated as to where he might have shoved a pin or joined a wire e.t.c

P.S I got my engine from a chap that sells on ebay (MadMadScorpioMan) it was a bargain and very low mileage so for anyone else I would highly recommend him.

My model is

1998 2.3 Manual Ultima

Thanks

don't know if this helps ..
Had recent problem with fans .fan contolled by engine temp sender.there are two sensors on the front of the engine on the thermostat housing. The sensor with one wire is for the temp guage on the dash the sensor below this has two wires. One wire is feed the other goes to the pcm module.two wires come from the module and go to the fan relay located front drivers side behind headlight..can't miss it it's long and green....
found fans switch on when thermostat housing is about 95 degrees.
if no signal is received by pcm then fans switch on by default.
If you car has large green relay behind front headlight check for any additional wires connected that may switch on fans.

Hi macmilm ..it's worth asking you if the heater controls are set to demist when that happens ?? ..in which case the Rad Fans will default to ON and is in fact the correct operation ?? .. regards ..STN

Worth checking that out... not sure...

Why do they default to come on Huh? dont make sense to me....

The way it works on mine is...

Turn blower on: 5 -10 secs... engine fan comes on....

Turn blower off : Engine fans stay on ....

Turn ignition off.... then back on ... engine fans come back on....

Have to turn car off for hour - ish before fans reset and stay off....

Thanks

The fans cool the air conditioning condenser as well as the radiator so they will come on if you select the correct settings on the heater panel even if the engine is not up to temperature.

Sounds as if they are working as they should.

I found that in normal weather conditions the air conditioning turns only one fan on and that is on low speed. The wiring fault on mine caused both fans to run at full speed 5 secs after turning on engine.

Had a look at the green thing and like you said loads of wires are going into it.... Will try and trace from the Thermo housing as you said.

In my case it is always both fans and on full so I think it is a wiring problem not the default happening which should be one fan and slow...

Also my Air Con does not work and never has since I got the car so maybe he disabled it to help with overheating and this could be causing fans to come on Huh dunno but will try check the wires from the relay ...

Cheers.

only a few months b4 I bought the car he had the Air Con re gassed at Ford (he gave me receipt) so thats why I think someone has intentionally disabled the Air Conn...

My problem caused both fans to run full... dirty contacts on engine temp sensor on thermostat housing .I think only a couple of volts supply to sensor ,so even a slightly dirty contact could make  the  pcm turn both fans on full after a few seconds.I read somewhere a fault in the aircon  pressure switch could cause a problem.

Thanks for all your tips David.... I have access to Autodata 2005 that has full diagrams e.t.c so I can find the AirCon pressure switch if needed that way (I hope)

Guess it should detail the temp sensors aswell..

If he had the aircon regassed, wouldn't it have had to be working for Fords to test how cold it got?

Have a look at the fault finding page, both fans on full is also a symptom of aircon problems (which you have).

I'm not convinced someone has tried to cover anything up, a head gasket problem would show up fairly quickly no matter how many tricks you tried to hide it
