Engine not acheiving temperature

Hi All, I'm now on my second Scorpio 2.3 Ultima Auto estate and have a problem with the day to day running of the car I drive approx 17 miles each way to work (most of which is clear-running motorway) during which engine doesn't get anywhere near running temperature i.e. mid-scale. it will creep up slightly but not leave the 'blue zone' If I'm stuck in heavy traffic for a long time though it will creep up, only to go back down when I'm 50 mph or more. It is really sluggish and not as sharp on acceleration as my previous one. It also seems heavy on fuel. I'm getting around 270miles per full tank. I have held-down the trip button on the dashboard to check the engine temperature and it corresponds with the level on the gauge. so I'm pretty sure the gauge is not lying. It also flips to full-scale when I switch off and on. When I first got the car, I had a full service in which I specified the coolant to be changed (since my last scorp blew a head-gasket). I was wondering whether the coolant was too efficient? or maybe the Thermostat was stuck full-open? I was wondering whether anyone else has experienced this? or could provide some clues as to where I could look. I also have a really wired vibration when I am braking between 50mpg to 40mph. All other speeds are fine. Is this warped front-discs? or something more sinister?

My moneys on either the thermostat being stuck open or missing altogether Can you see water being pumped back into the coolant reservoir as soon as engine is started from cold? dont check it when its hot!! p.s. dash needles flicking up and down on start could be the battery/alternator problem

Re vibration if the vibration is only there when you brake suspect front disks or front suspension bushes.Just to confirm try easing on the handbrake at 40 to 50 mph just in case any thing is wrong at the rear end.

I have the same problem on my 2,9 12V.. The needle never gets to "the horisontal" position (9 o“clock)..Only when stuck in traffic it rises. Is this a problem for the engine? What are the consequences? How to solve it? Regards ScorpioInDK

my 12v -96 wanted more fuel, 35% or so. I also had problems with the autobox lock up. After refitting a new thermostad the problem is solved. Changing it on my engine took me 30 mins.
