Cams and timing on 2.3 = big problems

First of all thanks for letting me join i really appreciate as i am REALLY STUCK I have just replaced the cylinder head on a R reg 2.3 ultima Everything went fine thanks to this site, except the timing. I do exactly as the manual say, the camshaft pulleys are aligned to 2.2deg on left and 2.9deg on right and the copper chain marks match up perfectly, the same was done for the sprocket and the crank. In the manual it shows that the pulley on the crank is marked with a "V" which supposed to point UP when cyl 1 is at TDC. On my car there is no "V" just "I" which is not pointing up at TDC on No1, and 3 dots " o o o ", which are pointing up at TCD on No1. So i set it at that "o o o" pointing directly up and No1 seems to be at TDC. Now it shows in the manual (from this site) that at cyl No2 at TDC the lines on the camshaft pulleys are supposed to point directly into each other but on my car they do that when cyl No1 is at TDC. Also how do you know which camshaft goes left and which goes right. I'v been down to fords and they haven't got a clue!!! I will take pics tomorrow! Any ideas? Thanks!!!!

I KNOW THIS IS AN OLD PROBLEM BUT HAVE YOU GOT ANYWHERE YET ?? THE CAMS ARE NO PROBLEM , THEY HAVE 2 RINGS ON BOTH . THE INLET HAS THE RINGS CLOSE TOGETHER AND THE EXHAUST HAS THEM FURTHER APART. THE CHECKING OF THE CAM TIMING CONFUSES ME ALSO AS THE MARKS CAN NEVER DO WHAT THE MANUAL SAYS . IF ITS ANY CONSOLATION I AM NOW IN THE SAME BOAT HAVING RENEWED THE HEAD GASKET.
