Oil sump plug

Yet again I've come to change the oil/filter only to be thwarted by the immovable sump plug......second time now in just over 3 years of ownership....and this despite the Ford 'mod' to put the plastic washer on....

Anyone else had a problem with sump plugs?...especially if they are of the supposedly 'modded' type?...it seems the metal is just too soft and rounds off and deforms at any attempt to free it.

I hate having to resort to using a garage for something as simple as this....It just won't budge and now looks nothing like it should having had a variety of spanners/wrenches and molgrips attached to it....AAARRRGGGHHHH!!!

Had this once, not on a Scorpio surprisingly! In the end I got the plug out by getting the car up in the air to ease access and make sure the wrench is directly on the plug, and use the tightest and best fitting socket you can! Then replace the blighter!

If access is good enough try a ring spanner and a small hammer maybe. Makes it easier if you can see what is going on!

Failing all that there are special sockets you can buy that "fit" to the shape of a rounded bolt/pulg etc. Think Argos used to do them.

Or disconnect the battery and weld a metal bar onto it

If you can get good access   from  underneath ,   a well aimed whack  with a hammer and cold chisel     in the   anti-clockwise  direction   may be all   that's   needed to  loosen  it.   ( have  the  new sump nut handy, natch )

WOOHOO!!!  Grin Grin Grin

Thanks for the advice guys!!......prize goes to Mr Floppy with the least expensive and easiest option...i.e. motor factors were shut and I can't weld....a few taps with a hammer and a well aimed chisel got it to shift, then managed to get a spanner to fit to do the rest...

Don't you just love the feeling you get when you manage to get the job done!!
