Hi guys these Scorpios are a challenge, and i think mines winning loll
Revd my car up today as i was trying to get some warm air into the car and a horrible tapping noise appeared at the drivers side of the engine towards the back
I think it might be the exhaust manifold cracked
can anyone tell me if this sounds right and what i have to do to get to the manifold
Thanks in advance

The manifolds can crack. I know because one of mine has.

But this does sound as if it could be one of the cats as mentioned. I'd start by checking that out.

Do you know anyone nearby who can give you an OBD scan?

Barrie

Not sure what the OBD codes indicate but white/light grey smoke is small amounts of oil burning, not a good sign. Also possible coolant burning also.

How is the engine running apart from the tap tap tap. Does it tick over O.K, does the noise change depending on revs & does it get louder when you rev the engine or rev it then let it idle? Also does it seem as powerful as normal, anything different to normal Huh

White smoke can also appear when condensation forms in the exausts

Blue smoke means it's burning oil

Black smoke .....hmmm that's really nasty...or it burns to much fuel (to rich)

Hi Dave

The engine is running ok apart from a slight ticking, it sounds like a slight blow from the maifold aria on the drivers side.  It ticks over ok wih no loss to the water or oil and it doesnt get any louder with revs but it isnt as poerful as it was.

I have just had it in for mot and it failed on the cat test,  but i am more concerned about the white smoke.

Could it be that the cat has failed and blocked the exhaust, would that cause the smoke ?

Anything's possible mate what did the tester say?

It all depends on how much smoke we are talking about here, on startup a bit of smoke is not uncommon for a few minutes as sometimes condensation builds up & it has to clear as Octavian_P said.
It is when it does it after the engine has been run for a while, can be small amounts of oil or coolant.
The more oil gets burnt the darker the colour usally.

Does sould like the CAT at the moment so get it replaced & see what happens.

Thanks for the replys guys

i had the exhaust checked today at 3 independent garages, as i never take the advice of just one. All three confirmed that the baffles had gone in both the middle section of the exhaust. But they said that the cats were ok, dont know how they know that by just banging them

Would this cause the smoke problem ?, which is not too bad today but there again it s not as cold as it has been.

All three was not interested in the ticking noise from the front of the car near the manifold aria, probably because it means stripping the heat shield off. They were more interested in selling me tyres as there on offer at the moment

I have it booked in our local garage and i will let you know how i go on

thanks for all the help guys

I suggest that you check for any of the vaccuum pipes being loose or disconnected around the inlet manifold. This can cause problems with the fueling of the car and can give virtually all of the symptoms you describe, I know I've had them!! Listen for a hissing sound across the top of the engine and that will lead you to the leak.
