In both of my front arches, there are these little sticky out things - anyone know what they are / what they do ?

These are the pins for locating the jack packed away in the boot, if you need to lift the car to change a wheel. There are two more, one each side toward the rear. The jack has a round shaped top that is designed to fit over this pin, to locate it and prevent it from slipping when the weight of the car is on it. I've only ever used the jack once for a puncture, and it does work. but the cigarette butts are not obligatory

I prefer the trolley jack in the boot, saves all that faffing about in the spare wheel compartment, in fact I doubt the jack has ever been used since new

Mr Floppy, Yes, years ago I used to carry one, too. But punctures are now so rare that I don't think lugging that sort of weight around is worth the petrol used - besides, I have an estate and such an item on view might tempt a thief to break in ... If there is a slow puncture then a quick run to a tyre dealer will save using the jack at all - but on that occasion the tyre was virtually flat when I saw it and if I'd tried to run it it would have damaged the wheel.
