Called into local FMD "RapidFit" depot yesterday to get a 6,000 mile oil and filter change.

Checked oil cold today and right down at the min mark!! Shocked

They also put in 10/40 when the recommended is 5/30 - they say that they go off the Castrol guide which says 10/40 - this is a Ford Dealer!! Huh

I'll have to go back tomorrow to get it sorted - so ends up as a not so rapid fit Angry  Not cheap either at £23.

Agree

Even the handbook states 5W/30 for a 2.3!

If I get someone to change my oil & filter I always tell them the new stuff's in the boot (5W/30 + EFL298 for my Cossie).

Unbelievable

Went back today to be told that although they'd top it up they had put the right amount in and the dipstick was only a rough indicator  so down at the min was fine!!!

Also, they say, "the level should be checked cold before the engine has run", "the level is lower when its hot" and lots more guff.

They used 10/40 'cause that's what Castrol advise - doesn't matter what Ford say - it's the oil manufacturer that matters!!

Showed them the handbook about grade and checking the level - "they know how to do it and I'm a crackpot"!!!

This was the Manager.  Letter will be on its way to his Manager

Probably just a problem with the one I went to so don't write then all off but check what oil they'd use.  They argued that if I'd asked for Ford oil they would have quoted higher as it costs more.  I wasn't bothered about Ford oil but would have prefered the Ford recomended grade.  Interestingly enough the Castrol website recomends GTX Magnatec 5W-30 so not sure why the book at the workshop recomended 10W-40.

There are also discrepencies in the refill quantity.  The Manual on this site says something like 4.25 litres, Castrol website and the Owner's Guide quote 4 litres.

Agree My owner's guide (dated Jan 1997) states 4.0 litres with a filter change for a 2.3 16V. I'd go by that. The 4.25 applies to the 2.0 8V.
