Drive belt tensioner

As the beast is off the road for a few weeks I thought i'd do some of the little jobs that needed doing, one of which was the drive belt renewal, old one came off without even loosening the tensioner and the new one went on the same, started the car squeal city, can't even rev it without it going mad. The tensioner moves up and down quite freely, had a look on the Forum and it mentions tightening the tensioner but i thought it was self-adjusting? Anyone help?

The tensioner is self adjusting cannot be adjusted . May be the bearing is going in the tensioner.... You should have had to release the tension on the tensioner to remove the old belt and it need a big ring spanner (17mm I think) to do that . If you could do it with out that then the it does sound as though the spring in the tensioner has broken ... worth checking to see.

Normally their should be a fearsome amount of tension on the belt via the spring, with easy access and only a single bolt securing it, it should be fairly easy to pick up a replacement from a scrappy.

Sounds like the tensioners gone, you can pull the belt at the top run and see the tensioner move up and down.
