I had the time to investigate the problem with my A4LDE gearbox further. Changing the torque converter and seal has made the symptoms less aggressive. The car has also developed another problem. When the car changes from 2nd to 3rd gear whilst accelerating the engine revs and there is a delay as it thumps into 3rd.

Went to my local scrap yard for MAF sensor, the guy seemed to be very knowledgeable about them and said I need the right one as there are three types.
I explained my symptoms and he kindly suggested I visited his mate’s garage for a diagnostic before paying £25 + vat for MAF as he thought it would not cure the problem.

Went to his mate’s garage, symptoms, go to ford. As my local ford Dealer charges £97 per hour. Back to square one.

Anyway I went the local Ford dealers, crept in around the back of the workshop and spoke to a guy sat at a desk. He told me that I shouldn’t be in this part of the building but suggest I walked up to the far end of the workshop and ask for Dave. Explained the symptoms to Dave and he said changing the MAF and reprogramming the computer wouldn’t make any difference. He said it’s an internal fault within the gearbox and suggested another second-hand gearbox. Before I left he suggested another gearbox specialist in another town, well the last gearbox specialist I saw relieved me of £310.

Called this specialist, asked if anyone there who is an expert on these gearboxes and he replied “yes me”. He explained that he had stripped and rebuilt a gearbox with almost the same symptoms to find it had not cured any of its faults. He then said he spent along time investigating the gearbox to realise it is a very strong box but has a problem maintaining oil pressure. He said by removing the sump and gaining access to an adjustable oil pressure valve he has been able to cure many symptoms without reconditioning the gearboxes.

Anyone else know of this valve?
 Huh
