Broken spring - sorted

A few weeks ago I heard a loud "twangy clunk" as I reversed off my driveway. I had a quick look as best as I could ( I`m disabled so no crawling around underneath ) but couldn`t see anything wrong. The sound became regular, but only at full lock, at low speeds. I rang a friend of mine who suggested it could be a coil spring, either broken, or turning in its` mountings. I couldn`t see a problem with the spring ( drivers-side ) and measuring the wheel arch to tyre height showed no difference. When my mate had a look from underneath he saw that the spring had snapped near the top but appeared to be sitting firmly. I ordered a new spring from Halfords ( big mistake ! ) but when it came to be fitted they had supplied the wrong one. The car had to stay overnight whilst a new spring was sourced from Ford ( at the same price as Halfords ). The car is a 1996 2.9 12v saloon, there was no obvious incident to cause the break but the car is driven hard, sometimes on unmade roads. The car is showing 144,000 miles ( 96,000 with me ) and has had no spring problems before. I have not heard of this before but it may be worth remembering. [Paul Boulden

Had one go on an Escort once the very same, low speed straight road, loud twang, they must go sometimes, maybe a weak area on the spring

The front springs on the Scorp are surprisingly thin, breakage is not something that many owners have reported, although the Mondeo has a reputation for snappin' 'em.
