Engine stopping at speed

Hi all,

Now I have fixed my thermostat and temp switch problem - something else has started happening!

When I'm on the Motorway and accelerating up to 70MPH, at around 50MPH the engine cuts out. It's happened several times recently to the point where I needed to be recovered from the M4  ?? Undecided

When the car cuts out there's a small release of smoke from the exhaust and a little from behind the engine (gearbox dipstick area). Also, the PATS LED flshes continously when I try and start the engine again.

My mechanic is convinced that it is an electrical fault as after leaving the car for a few minutes it works fine again!? The transmission fluid level is good and when in Neutral or Park the engine will run continuously - It only seems to stall at 50MPH +

Has anyone else experienced this? Could it be a fault with the ignition key transponder? I have cleaned the MAF so I'm pretty sure that's OK. Are there any other sensors that would reveal anything?

Hi Mike

Is it an Auto?? What engine?

My 24v changes up to top gear at around 50mph, gearbox problem maybe??

have you had an OBD scan??

Try it in Sports Mode and/or with OD engaged to see if it makes a difference

IS the Led flashing a code....Huh?
have a read of this and the associated pages may help http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/pats.htm

The could be something to do with the VSS failing as the eec get sthe signal from there and does all the gear changes as required..

Hi Guys, thx for the replies.

It's a 2.3 DOHC Auto.

I will try and simulate it later this evening and try and get a PATS code. I'll also try with O/D switched off to see if that makes a difference.
I happens in both sports and economy modes.

OK I took the car out this evening and it cut out again.
It was virtually stationery when I did cut out which it hasn't done before. The PATS LED was flashing 6:1 which is a fault between the PATS sensor and the EEC  Shocked So at least I have an idea where to investigate further. I tried to start the car again several times, but nothing. After about 5 mins I tried again and hey presto so I was able to limp a few more yards down the road (until it cut out again!) so I could leave the car safe - Will try and recover it tomorrow.

Anyone else experienced this fault before?

Looks like a trip to the Ford dealers in the new year  Undecided

Could be some thing as simple as a faulty plug , worth checking them , make sure they are fully located and pushed home, I might have a PATS module in my box if it is of any help.

Let me know if you find the source of this. My 24v has the same problems. It started by cutting out, when heating oup and idleing, now it wont start and the PATS gives the 1-6 sequence.  Huh

Auto-electrician finally found the problem! It was an intermittent connection into the ignition relay! Soldered up and works a treat!

According to the auto-electrician the PATS code was a red-herring as once the car is started the PATS system has done its job and the key can be theoretically removed.

JFYI the other thing he suspected initially was the fuel pump signal but eliminated this by listening near the fuel tank when the ignition was set to position-II and heard the fuel pump priming (so the EMM was sending a signal)

He also said it was a good idea on these cars to tape a good quality carrier bag over the drivers side fuse-box as it was prone to water impegrantion - so I'm off to Harrods tomorrow  Grin
