Just been doing some more adjustments and one of the things I wanted to do was check the spark plugs. After removing the old ones I find that they are Champion RC7YCC and not any of the ones listed on here:

I note that on the page above the correct Champion plugs should be the RC10PYC, so although I can assume that the old ones are not correct what would I be seeing during use in terms of tick-over and performance in using the incorrect type?
I remember reading somewhere that with Champion plugs the lower the number the cooler they run at, so I presume that the difference between the old 7's and the type that should be fitted, the 10's is down to operating temperature?

DJ they are plugs used on the 2.9 Sierra 12V's
They are not supposed to be used with a Eddis ignition system & are not platnium.
Basically they will not last long & could cause damage to the ignition system.

Good job I got around to checking this sooner rather than later then. Amazes me how some people try to cut corners sometimes!

Yeah them plugs are cheap compared to the proper ones.
Sounds like cost cutting only to spend more further done the line to me

It's not been my morning! One plug was stuck so fast in the head we tried all manner of soaking agents to loosen it but when we tried with just one attempt to remove it the plug body snapped away from the threaded shank and now the only way I see of removing it is taking the head off.

Thanks Highlander but we are already past the point of the spark plug breaking and leaving just the threaded shank in the head!
...flippin idiots whoever tightened this plug up before!!!

The only thing I can think of is a snap on extracter.
Hammer it in to whats left of the plug, it grips & with a bit of luck it unscrews 
Then you have to put all the bits together, decide how many bits have fallen into the bore & if it's O.K to start the engine
Saved me a couple of times last year on other engines

Stud Extractor? Easy-Out?
Used to use these as an Aircraft Fitter many moons ago before i was made redundant (twice! But thats another story).

My brother-in-law says he's going to talk to one of his machinest contacts that recon's engines and heads as he is sure that he will have something like this.
In fact he said that removing broken plugs from heads is something he makes quite a bit of cash from by all accounts.

Only mentioned Snap on as their tool can go down the hole to the plug alot can not.
Also it is a metal rod with grooves, you hammer it into the centre of the plug (whats left of it) & you then have a kind of Torx drive a special nut fits onto it then you can treat it like a normal bolt & use a impact driver on it etc.

Think we are going to have to look for that Sanp-On tool as our contact wants the head off to remove the remaining spark plug body.
Also, all the tools we can find seem to have short shanks and will disappear inside the hole. Have you got a picture and part number for your Snap-On part howieD?

hi solarpanel here,what pot has the stuck plug mines number 6 and as yet i have not had time to get to grips with it,got time to do it now but the white stuffs on the ground, ho hum.how did you manage to snap the top off,all the tools i have tried only go round on the plug.

Mine is stuck in the centre position on the rightside of the engine (as you look at it from the front of the car).
The plug snapped because some idiot put it in too tight (previous owner). The threaded part of the spark plug is still in the head but the whole ceramic part of the plug came away complete, which is a relief as it means there is no broken parts in the cylinder.

Hi DJ, only take the head off as the last resort, plug should have broken off with just threaded bit & the seat left i the head, ceranic & centre electrode should have come out, you need the corrispoding sized stud extractor for the hole on the remaining bit of the plug, iff poss you will have to use an extension, 3/8 socket set 6 inch one should do, bit of a tip fisrt use a punch,perhaps 25mm dia to give the broken bit some punnnishment with a hamer first befor trying the extractor, only remove the head at the last resort.

Exactly right Martin, got the complete ceramic part of the plug and electrode out. HowieD is coming down Friday to have a go at getting it out for me,...will rpeort back
