It's a bit chilly

Hi All

Just returned from a lovely journey to France where the car performed exceptionally well and even through snowy Kent on the way back (and despite what appear to be odd rear tyres that are going to get changed tomorrow) it held the road and its contents pefectly.

Just one thing has been troubling me and that is the climate control, or more specfically the heater.  It seems to have a bit of a problem getting to temperature.  For example if the car is already hot and it's 2 degrees outside and I put the CC on "Hi" and "Auto" with the Aircon off (though on makes no difference) the air that comes out can at best be described as tepid if not actually.  It does get hot eventually but the heat is never much more than luke warm and has a habbit of dropping off and not returning even if the car temeperature is higher than it is.  Is this how it should be? In these conditions the internal temperature can be held to around 19 but no higher. Temperature is uniform across all vents - eg it's not just  the face level vents that are chilly.

I have reset the system as per website instructions and this shows no faults.

Any ideas for a quick fix or is this something the garage should look at?

All help gratefully received.

Thank you.

How would I find out if that is the case (eg where is it and what would it look like if it was stuck open)? and what would I do about it to fix it?

Cheers

Paul, I'm not sure about a 24 valve, on my 2.9 12v its at the front of the engine inside the thermostat housing. When I changed mine ( it was stuck closed! ) I did the following:
Drain off about 2 ltrs of coolan't ( make sure engine has cooled down, but not cold reason for this later) into a clean container.
Remove top hose. Undo the three bolts holding the stat housing to engine ( these can be tight and corroded into the head so it helps to have the engine warm, however if they are realy tight don't use to much force as the bolt may snap off)
When bolts are out remove housing and stat. If the stat is stuck open it will be obvious. If not you may as well check it as it is out in a bowl off boiling water just to see it working.
Refit or replace using a new rubber seal. I used the old one because I was suppleid with the wrong one and the old one  was ok but you should replace it really. I also used a bit of copper slip on the bolt threads as they were a bit tight coming out.
Top up cooling system.
Don't forget this was on my 12v. I exspect someone will say if its different soon.
Mike.
