Timing Belt / Chain

I am a complete mechanical klutz without any knowledge but 6 months ago was given a N Reg Scorpio Exec 2litre( Father in law had to give up driving Ford Maindealer offered £200 even though only done 50K miles). Well Father in Law now no longer with us and visiting Mother has put 20K miles on the clock ( 450 mile round trip a couple of times a week will do it). Poor old fella was very confused towards the end and have not been able to find handbook. So question is what is the recommended life of a belt or is it a chain?

hi there sorry for your loss. the car has a chain. as long as you give it a good oil change every 6-10k miles, it will be fine. plugs last about 25-30k miles. hth

While we're on the subject, if the chain breaks while doing 65mph will the engine be wrecked ( like some cars with timing belts ) or will it survive unscathed and only need a new chain ?

Generally speaking (and also from experience) when the chain breaks it typically bends 4 valves on one of the cylinders - you might be unlucky and get 2 cylinders affected but that's about as much damage it will do. The engine is rebuildable and will need replacement valves, gaskets, chain, guides (which will more than likely have broken up earlier and be the cause of the snapped chain, and a new tensioner (recommended).
