Buying 97 cosworth, Advice needed
« on: Jan 2nd, 2006, 5:41pm »

Hi,

I am seriously considering buying a 97 Cosworth with 95,000 miles on the clock.

It has about 1 - 1½ seconds of chain rattle when starting from cold (parked outside, -5c and not started for 2 days)

Is this something to be overly concerned about ? I restarted the car about 6 hours later and no sign of rattle

and advice gratefully received, including what else to look out for.

Seen the list and checked all on it, it is mainly the 1 - 1½ secs of chain rattle on startup that I am concerned about, although it was very cold and standing 2 days so maybe nothing to worry about, not really sure.....

Well a oil change might stop it but then it might not.

No real way of telling some owners will tell you their car has done it for years others it did it for a week then the chain snapped. Angry

1 - 1½ sec isn't much thow but it is still not right so it's a risk.

Your call really & it should mean it's cheap as well.

\do we know just how many people have had chains snap on the 24v? I know of 2 broken on EBay, Steve Congrave had one and I remember someone else having the same issue. Can't think of many though.

From all the reading I have done it seems to be quite a confusing area. With lots of very different opinions, Think I will get the car and try 2-3 quick oil changes to get all the old stuff out and clean the engine out.

I should probably not buy it, but I am not good at doing sensible things, and the car is just so d**n nice !!

Hi deefer !!!

I live in Romania, the same thing happens here, the scorpio is a high priced car, and spare parts are not cheap. I advise you to check if you have a ford dealear and if that dealer can supply you with spare parts for the car. Don't be amazed how much they will cost.

I bit the bullet with mine, it's a 2.3 (not a 2.9) manual. After i bought her i foaund out:

ABS don't work, AC works when it wants to, brake disks and pads where just a joke, front tires where cracked......and the list continues, broken wireing looms, brunt spark plugs, dirty oil, all the filters (oil, gas, air...)where colged, full of dirt and so on. But afer a full year of owing it, i found out that it's an amazing car, good quality, and if you treat it well, it will treat you good as well. As for the chain rattle, you could change the tensioners, the cahins the sprockets and put a prelubrifier on it and run it only with fully syntetical oil.  The cossie will last a life time  Smiley.

Cheers !

I am also looking at a 2.3 manual, very clean car, new summer and winter tyres, new exhaust and all electrics work. (I checked the oils and they were clean too)

Well abot decisions, a firend of mine, Vlad who is a memeber here also, has a scorp, a 2.9 cossie, and it's wonderfull. I felt in love with that engine and that silk smooth autobox. If i had enough money i would bought a 2.9 for me and give may 2.3 to my parrents  Grin.

What about car optionals between 2.3 and 2.9. It is a ghia ?, an Ultima ? a ghia X, has leather ?
