On start up my 2.5td looks as if its on fire in the engine compartment.Smoke will pour from the sides of the bonnet for around 5 mins then seems to go away.Could this be the exhaust manifold as there is also a chuffing/hissing sort of noise.Dont think its the head as no loss of power or water in oil syndrome ect?

You don not say if you have you looked under the bonnet in the engine compartment to SEE where the smoke is coming from? The source of the smoke should give you some indication of what is taking place!

Without seeing it my guess would be a slight oil leak from somewhere, possibly the rocker (cam) cover gaskets. The oil maybe trickles down onto the exhaust/manifold area then burns off as it heats up

Thanks for that Dave.Obviously I have checked out the situation yet cannot determine where the fumes are actually coming from.I will investigate what you say?.As for the remark from solar panel,I guess if his car started to smoke he would try to piss on it or warm his hands?

If its an oily sort of smoke try looking down the back right of the engine as that is where (if i remeber rightly from mine) there is a black plastic rocker cover/crancase breather pipe which goes up to the long air pipe which comes out of the air filter box. This might have worked its way loose and now venting smoke. Truckers in very cold places still do the fire under the engine thing to stop everything from freezing, though nowdays you can get electric engine block heaters which do the same thing. Matt
