Help!!!!! Changed the oil and filter today, saw Halfords were doing a deal on the oil so bought it,changed no trouble, thought I'd be green and recycle the old stuff... funnel in old container, tip cat litter tray with old oil into container...bingo 5 litres of oil all over patio, wife not impressed, oil slick size of texas in back garden, panicked with jet washer now oil slick size of South America, greenpeace involved concerned about local wildlife getting contaminated,RAF want to napalm slick, local wildlife a.k.a cat walked througth said slick, bedroom carpet now has interesting black footprint motif running througth it,divorce procedings looking likely unless I can shift it,anyone got any good ideas ??

Duuuuude been there done that. Get some Gunk Driveway Cleaner or similar (about £5 a bottle) from Halfords/motor factor etc. If there is a lot of oil use some sand or even soil to soak it up as much as possible before sweeping it away. For the carpet try some carpet shampoo I guess, even if you have some stuff for the car, don't spread it too much - work on a small area. Might have to get it fairly wet but it should come away EDIT: paint thinner has been suggested to me, never tried it but may be worth a go - carefully! Have a look at: http://www.thriftyfun.com/tf466377.tip.html

Paint thinners or "Gun Wash" will remove marks on carpet (used to use it in the Valeting Trade, when mechanics got oily footprints or marks on car carpets and upholstery)but, as said before be carefull. Pour a small amount onto a cloth and give it a light rub. Ventilate the area well as it stinks and is highly flammable. I have also heard that CocaCola is good for removing oil stains from driveways, never tried it though. HTH

Next time take it down to your local garage £15 for oil and filter, can't be bad , let them get the skinned knuckles, greasy barnet and a sore back, while you have a small sherry down the Wine Bar.

National Tyres has a promotion on ( when don't they have a promotion on ?). Oil and Filter change for as low as £10, that's where I'm going to-day, it's a round trip of 50 miles but I don't fancy working on the car in this weather.

I would rather be cold, lying underneath the car. I wouldn't let any of those places anywhere near my car. If i do it, at least i know it will be done right. Wouldn't be the first time they thread the sump plug or round the head. Anyways that's my opinion

It was £21 for the oil and filter change, they filled it with ( according to the invoice ) 5ltrs. of Visco Synthetic Oil 0W-40 ! ( I hope that's 10W-40 ). I think that's OK for a 2ltr. 16V.
