HELP!!!

I'm in a really bad fix here, and any help or advice is welcome.

While on holiday in the Lake District my autobox went mad.  The failure light came on and the gears went beserk, changing more or less at random.  Either it would try to start in fourth (and stall) or it would try to change down to first at speed or whatever - it went mad.

Anyway I managed to limp it to Ford in Kendal who said "Change the transmission and that will be anything from £1,300 to £3,000 depending on how much exhaust we break in process."  I had to leave it there because it wouldn't drive and now I'm back in London waiting for them to start work.

I contacted the garage who sold it to me less than a month ago and they said "send it back to us and we'll sort it" but I have no faith in their mechanics - since they gave it a so-called full service before it left them.

I contacted my 3rd party warranty but they said they'd only consider paying for a transmission repair, not a replacement. Ford on the other state that attempting the repair on a 100,000 mile old transmission would be silly and replacement is the only option.

Now I'm back in London with the car sitting in Kendal awaiting Ford to start work on Tuesday and I have no time or inclination to return to Kendal unless it is to pick up a repaired car.

I want to keep the car (I can't afford to write off what was spent on it and besides it's a lovely car) so do I grit my teeth and let Ford do the repair or do I waste more time having it RAC'd back to London and get the vending garage/my own garage to try the repair.

Bearing in mind that if the car is fixed I want it to stay fixed and last at least 5 years.

Or is there another option I haven't considered?

Cheers

There are 2 A4LDe autobox's (presumably 2nd hand) for sale on Ebay at the mo.

Just a suggestion.

Not as good as a brand new one but much cheaper than £3k!

hi there

you said the o/d light flashed. that means it's stored a code. ask for to tell what codes were found. post these code(s) back here. then get the RAC to get it back home. with the code(s), we can then figure out what has went on. might not be the 'box, but we can't tell until we see the codes.

btw the recon 'box fitted (1 year warranty) is more like £800. Wink

The £1,300 included fitting I believe - the actual box price was around £850.  I'll see what I can do about the rest.

Read that page - would that wiring fault (alone) also cause burnt transmission oil?  Indeed burnt and brown oil less than a week after changing it?

 Huh
