Engine won't start

Well I'm a bit  Sad today. I haven't been using my Scorp since putting it back on the road because it broke down the other weekend and I haven't yet found out why. It has always started but then intermitently stops. Last week end I checked the engine loom for visible damage and all looks ok, I also checked the cut out switch in the boot and that seems to be working. When I switch the ingnition on I can here the fuel pump working for a few seconds so I'm guessing that fuel is getting to the engine. Last week end I had it running fine, I parked it and it has been there all week. Today I went to start her up and she fired on what sounded like one or two cyls once and that was it. There is plenty of power in the battery and the motor spins the engine no problem. I removed the plugs today and they were wet with fuel, cleaned and dried them but she still would not start when they were refitted. I was wonderring if this car has a crank sensor, if so where is it? If any of you guys have any sugestions as to what to look at next please let me know.
Oh well its of to Milton Keynes in the wifes Avensis again Embarassed

is it the 24v or a 12v 2.9?

If its the 24v it does have a crank position sensor if it is the 12v NO .

As it is the 12v then I would be looking to the coil and leads as the syptoms you describe are similar to thse you get from those faulty componets.. Also looking at the distributor and rotor arm, and giving them a clean or replace.
The 12v uses OLD technology really but is a reliable work horse without the performance of the 24v and 2.3 ..

Thanks again for that Snoopy, I finaly had time to look at the car again today. I thorght I would try to start it and guess what, it started first time? It was a bit lumpy for the first few seconds and then for a while after it had run it was not picking up cleanly when I blipped the throttle.

As I still have not found a problem I decided to take the dissy cap off to check for wear or damage as you sugested, it all looks ok, no cracks or badly pitted contacts. I gave them a quick clean with some emery and the rotor arm as well. Leads look ok so I put it all back together and she started ok. Went for 7 mile drive
and all seemed fine. Maybe it was just damp the other day I don't know?
