Almost certainly the headlight switch - Had the same problem myself, I tried another switch off a friends car and it was still the same. The actual problem was the plug that fits the back of the switch - the tiny contacts inside the plug can 'short' causing them to open up and hence no contact. You need to look closely at the contacts and use a toothpick or similar to gently push them together again..

Had the same problem recently. It prove to be connection nr 15 on the plug of the main light switch. Some contact fluid and a sharpened match did the trick.
