Is it possible to input sound into the Ford 7000 radio from an external source or do i have to replace the radio altogether?

dunno about line in sockets, but, i've just ordered a fm modulator on ebay for 26 quid including postage (they do more basic ones for 14 quid). basically what it does is enable you play mp3/wma files etc through your existing hi fi, if you have loads of music files on your pc you can transfer them to a usb memory stick, this plugs into the modulator, you then tune the radio to the same frequency as the modulator. the one i've ordered has line in sockets for mp3 players etc.
this saves the hassle and expense of having the original radio removed and my clarion unit put in, i can also sell the clarion on ebay.

sounds v good.

Perhaps a bit too simple?  call me sceptic and all that.

What happens if you travel into an area where radio is being broadcast on the same frequency?

this is something i've yet to find out, the modulator transmits between 87 and 90mhz from what i remember reading.
the ebay company is tecknet online limited, item number 5857221426. this one runs from the cigarette lighter or batteries so i can use it indoors too, it also has preset settings such as rock, theatre etc. the cheaper ones just plug into the cigarette lighter and dont have the various sockets.

i was going to change the hi fi, but obviously didnt want to lose the functions on the steering wheel, so i reckon that'd cost around 50 quid in a proper car hi fi shop, so this seems to be a cheaper and possibly better option (if it works lol).
there are car hi fi's on ebay now that that are the usual cd players etc but also have a usb socket for memory sticks, they start at around 60 quid.

Quite like my Ford Steam Radio, currently use an audio in via the cassette deck for playing MP3s and reasonably happy with the consequences, I think others have referred to other sorts of line in stuff before.

Maybe this will be one of the better upgrades at some point, mini MP3 player in the ashtray.

Now the radios that they used to fit in mk3 escorts really were ropey, whats the hi-fi like in the GMC

The FM modulator is a very popular choice these days especially for iPod owners like myself.  There is a small plug-in type modulator and a combined cradle/charger and modulator which I am considering myself.

Best place to buy these from is the USA, much cheaper through ebay than buying from UK sellers.

Also speaking of 'crap' stereo's I bought a CD/radio from Halfords back in September 2004, it was on sale at 99.99 and plays mp3 files on CD-R's etc.  It has full masking fetaure but after using one for about 8 months the masking system failed which only left me with the use of a radio.

I contacted the manufacturer as I had lost my original Halfords receipt and they said that each unit comes with 24 months warranty, they replaced the unit back in July last year and it sat in the box until my Scorpio was back on the road again which was December.

Unpacked the unit for the first time fitted it and guess what, the masking system does not work at all!

The unit is a Microstar MD7328 and it is made by a company called Medion Electronics, based in Swindon.

Medion have been nothing short of shocking in their customer service support as they are now saying that even though they gave me a raplacement back in June, because I do not have my Halfords receipt proof of purchase can not be established and therefore they will not be doing anything else.

I tried to complain via telephone but they said all customer complaints have to go through their web site email address for customer service.

I documented my complaint and sent it off to the specified email address only to get a message back saying it was for German customers only and all UK issues must be reported through their web site support form.

This is the exact same form that I initially completed and got a thingyy member of Medion telling me basically it was tough!

I have fille dout numerous other forms in further attempts to complain but alas no joy.

Take it from me, the build quality is shocking and so is their customer support so don't buy anything from Medion UK.

fm modulator is the way to go in my opinion....
but beware of the "cheap ones".. Angry, did buy 1 off of ebay myself to run the DVD player through, all in, brand new for £24.99,what a waste of money....totally s**t...
interference was rife, sound was very erractic, flogged it back on......
invested in a JVC 1,ok the cost was £84.99,but what a difference Smiley,8 seperate frequencies to choose from, and the sound and quality is really amazing, ran perfectly ok through the original ford stereo, and even better through the VNR... Wink.....
you do get what you pay for..!!!!

No disrespect to anyone who uses the wireless FM modulators that you tune into the freq, but I've had about 8 different kinds of these and I have had problems with all of them under different circumstances e.g. radio interference, mobile phone interference, cross channels, engine noise coming through the speakers.

My recommendation (If you can find one) would be an FM modulator that piggy backs the Antenna input on the radio. You simply plug the FM modulator into the antenna in the back of the head unit then plug the vehicles antenna into the FM modulator. You then proceed to tune the radio to the set frequency (like the wireless ones). What I have found is that the plug in antenna type ones completely remove any noise and because it's wired instead of wireless I don't get ANY interference at all. I've had mine in my car for about 7 months now and I don't get a whisper of interference.

If any of you guys want one but can't find the wired ones, Walmart here in the US sell them for around $25. Send me some money to cover the unit and shipping and I'll send it over.

I would only use the iTrip, the genuine product for the Ipod device as I know a few people who use this with great success without any of the reported problems listed by other users regarding interference etc.

Ive got the FM-Modulator....  Grin

But the sound is not 100% good... Sounds a bit like a radio station witch isn`t well tuned...

But it is a easy an cheap way to get youre PlayStation2, MP3 player, Ipod or whatever to a car-radio without line-in....  Wink

thought i'd update this topic as i now have my modulator............

it works great, sound quality is spot on, it has 7 preset fm frequencies to choose from, but i havent had to change the frequency at all and although i havent tried it on any long trips, i live in london and as yet have suffered no interference with it. so far 20 or so quid well  spent.
