Scorpio 2.5 TDI Backfiring

Hi all,

I've got a 1995 N Reg 2.5 TDI Scorpio Ultima, and I've got what may be termed, a strange problem.

It backfires/ blows back through the inlet manifold. Has anyone got any ideas please.

Before anyone asks, I got the car like this, so I don't know how long it's been going on for.

I've noticed that it looks like its got new pipes to the injectors, and the pump looks like it could be new, but I'm not sure.

I hope somebody may be able to help.

Thanks a lot

Regards Pete

if its the engine then it will be valve related, or does is the vacuum pump (brakes) feed from the inlet manifold, that can make the engine sound rough

Ok Folks, Here's an update.

Someone else checked The Valves and pushrods as per martins suggestion, and came back to me saying that everything is ok.

Anyway, today being the warmest day so far, for a while, I thought I'd check them myself, and guess what I found....... One of the pushrods had jumped out of the socket  Grin

So, thanks for your advice Martin, you were spot on mate.....

My next question is, is it a common occurance for this to happen, and what can I do about it?

Thanks all, especially martin.

It does seem to happen only on the TD variant of the Scorpio. We have had a few reports in the past of this happening but nothing I would construe as  a serious problem.
I would sugest just keeping a eye on it .

I had this problem several times. Then I changed all 8 push rods to new ones. The old ones where about 1 -2 mm shorter than the new ones. Since this exchange I had no further troubble.
