2.9i electronic distributor circa 1990

2.9i 12v engine is fitted in a Panther. everything checks out OK except that it won't pull more than 5,000rpm when it starts to misfire with tacho going haywire and is seriously down on power before this apparent limit is reached. It should pull over 100mph in third, but struggles to make 80mph. Exhaust is clear, fuel pressure is 2.5-3.0 bar, basic idle timing is 12deg. BTDC. This car has only done 10,000 miles approx. Any ideas where to look for salvation? Kallista

Coil could be breaking downunder load, also check the plugs have the correct gap.. The tacho picks up the pulses of the ignition system and it is obviously picking up the misfires which is the most probable cause of ot going haywire.

Hi Snoopy, thanks for reply, will be checking plugs tomorrow. Maybe the cause as fitted new by previous owner. Local ford dealer has suggested ign. amplifier as pulse comes from the TFi unit to tacho. i come back with results as they occur. Thanks Kallista

Plugs checked out - new! gaps reset to .8mm. distributor swapped for s/h unit as TFI thought to be intermittent. revs now to 5.5k, still not enough and still wouldn't pull. Located Ford 'Star' tester and inserted in system, 6deg. retard wire disconnected. engine started and ignition timing checked, dizzy advanced to 15BTDC. awaiting chance to roadtest and report..

This sounds like a problem I come across once. Has the distrubter been messed about with recently? If you fit the wrong pick-up wheel say a 1991 to a 1989 you get the 5000rpm limit you mention & the engine appears to be trying to rip it's self apart.
