Complete Stereo Transplant

Does anyone know if it's possible to replace the entire (7000) system with a non-Ford unit? It's not as if I'm planning to do it soon but I am guessing (having got a new gearbox) that my car will last longer than the stereo and - as such - I am wondering if it is (in theory) possible to do the following: a) Change the head unit for a normal size one without leaving a gaping hole in the dahsboard. b) Have the new unit still work through the steering wheel controls? Anyone actually done it? Cheers Penguin

penguin.. changing the stereo will not be a problem, you can even buy the adaptor plates HERE as for keeping the original steering wheel controls,i think this will be a problem, you can however buy decent stereo's these days with remote controlers that can be attached to the wheel, not my choice, but i think this might be your only option, but others may know diffrent.. I have already changed my Standard Ford unit to a regular single DIN size head-unit. Remember that there is a hidden amplifier behind the dash (just above the glove box) that you will need to either bypass all-together or do as I did and buy the adapter harness to allow you to connect up an amplified head-unit into the Ford ribbon style cables. I got my harness from Halfords and it was labelled up for the Ford Probe only. It acts like an attenuator and drops the signal from the new head unit so that the hidden amplifier will continue to function as required. Long-term I would like to re-wire so that I bypass the Ford amp, just had other priorities

| ...because I'm an audio-holic and the quest for perfect sound has been mine for many years I guarantee that whatever system you are building, whether in the car or home it will only be as good as the weakest link in the chain. IMHO the Ford amp (as with just about every other standard fit audio device from other manufacturers) will be a weak link when using upgraded head units and speaker systems. Plus, I would also want to get rid of those horrible ribbon cables too...

I would not go as far as saying that as it's each to their own. What someone may think is adequate sound quality someone else may think sorely misses the mark. You could install your AV gear and see how the Ford amp works in your system. If you feel it is the weak link then plan to bypass it (which will involve some cabling changes). I am just very fussy when it comes to audio, although I am more foregiving when it comes to in-car stuff,...but my home system,...well that's another story!!!

Just to point out that Penguin wants to replace the 7000 system - so the amp either isn't fitted or could already have been by-passed Dave

...unless of course he has a 7000 system fitted by someone who does not understand the audio wiring circuit as was the case in my car,...probably why the stereo did not work when I got it
