Door latch not working when door closed

After ages being troublesome the driver's door handle will no longer open the door. Now I thought maybe it was a linkage problem but with the door open and using a screwdriver to do the job of the striker pin it operates perfectly with the door handle. Close the door again and it won't work. It feels a bit like the door lock is engaged. It works fine from the inside which is just as well or I wouldn't be able to climb over the passenger seat to open it or get out for that matter!. Has anyone got any ideas what maybe up?. I have an old faulty door latch to pull apart to understand what does what but I'm still puzzled. Update - The handle still operates when the latch clicks into the first (safety) position but not when the door is fully closed.

.......possibly the metal arm is slipping through the plastic part of the mechanism (worn).....take the "door card" off for inspection, and get a helping hand to open/close door while you are inside. Russ

Looking at the broken spare latch mechanism I have from the last time it broke, I suspect a nylon part has worn inside. Time to visit a scrappy for another spare.

| I could do but that entails removing the glass to remove the runner to remove the metal box over the latch etc. I'm going to have to do all that anyway so I might as well

I found that I could open the door if I pressed firmly against it. That at least allowed me to get in!. Not being a very satisfactory solution I nipped down to my local scrappie on Saturday morning and set about removing the latch from a bent '94 Granada Cossie (the locking motors have different wiring but the latches are the same). Fortunately the ignition key was in it and with a booster battery it allowed the window to be lowered so I could remove the glass. I was then able to remove the latch and head for home. Once home and after a cup of tea I set about replacing my old door latch with the even older one! I checked the replacement latch before fitting the glass and trim and it worked fine or so I thought). With glass and door trim duely fitted I shut the door and locked it but a pull on the door handle unlocked and opened it again! Somewhat puzzled I left it until Sunday. Everything off again and with the latch back on the kitchen table it appeared to be working fine apart from the cable to the internal door lever being slightly kinked. I swopped the cable and refitted it back into the car. This time it worked! I am now on my third door latch for this Scorpio.
