hello.......and.......auto advice please

hello all, just signed up and i have to say this is just about the most comprehensive support site of any car i have had, its brilliant.

on a whim on saturday i bought a 94 scorpio ultima 2.0 16v estate, well i thught that looks a bit different and very distinctive, 75k genuine miles mot to december, every bell and whistle works.......

and here's the but......

the auto box as per my reading on here....

1st ok, and into 2nd fine, then it revs to about 4000 and then thumps up at about 2500 into the 3rd. On A roads it feels like it really wants to change in 4th but doesn't and every now and then the O/D light flashes, the oil is a light brown colour and doesn't smell too bad.

I cleaned the MAF and that had a slight difference but all the same faults occur. From my reading there looks to be a problem with the solenoid(s) abd possibly the bands (whatever they are)

The question is what is the most economical fix for this, sooner or later if I keep driving it like this it will just go pop, am I better to cut to the chase avoiding diagnosis and mucking about with solenoids etc etc and find a good (better) second hand unit.

If I go that way, can I put any similarly aged box into it, and typically what should I be looking at to spend in terms of the box and labour.

ObviouslyI wish I'd come on here first, so that'll learn me.

Any ideas as to costs / sources etc wouls be good, if its at all relevant I'm in Potters Bar.

Thanks in advance

Hello and welcome Cheesy

Can you get an OBD scan done?
There might be a member close by who can do one for you

Thanks

I spoke to the Ford dealer in town, 1994 Scorpio, I may as well have been speaking Dutch to him.

There may be an indepedent who can do it for me tomorrow, but research on here suggests, solenoids 2 and three - send £££ immediately.

With the box sorted out I know this will be a very nice car, I just don't want to spend the earth on it.

Had exactly the same problem with a 96 estate. Lovely motor had a scan done for £30 and was then told could cost up to £900 to fix it!.  Someone suggested it might just have been a speed sensor @£60 but I never took it any further..

Hi DaveN that's very interesting (in a scary kind of way)

what did the scan come up with and
what bits would they have been fixing for £900
what did you do in the end

it doesnt sound too healthy to me, you could try a gearbox oil and gearbox oil filter change........

its tempting, but if its broken then that'll be a waste of £100 espcially if its something more serious stopping it changing gear

Well its been a busy afternoon,

i got a friendly gearbox specialist to plug his diagnostic thing in to the car and sure enough, 2 solenoid errors and one ratio problem. (at no cost though another garage wanted £45 + VAT cheeky sod to do it)

so time for another box to go in for the sake of economy rather than repair. as he tells me i have 1st, 3rd and reverse, so i was wrong to say earlier that i had 2nd

he has quoted £150 to remove the old one and put the new one in and to do the oil and filter on the new one too.

i have also been quoted £170 by a dismantler for a 2.0 ultima auto box with a 3 month warranty.

My questions are are these pirces any good in your experiences (they feel it)

And am I right in thinking that a 2.3 will also fit the 2.0.

Or what other gearboxes will fit the 2.0 16v Scorpio Ultima-  would (PLEASE SAY YES) for instance one from a 24v V6 Cosworth Scorpio Ultima fit?

Yep, they all fit, though they are slightly differences.
Should be ok to fit any one to the 2.0
not advisable to do it the other way though, eg fit a 2.0 box to a 24v Smiley

The bigger the engine the more brake bands the box has.

So putting a 24v through a 2.0 box is likely to wear it out very quickly

Its kinda like putting a Fiesta clutch in a Scorp... yes it will work but not for long Wink

Hello
Strange but I've a solenoid problem on 1st gear only.
OBD scan shows error as P0750 - shift solenoid A & P1751 - shift solenoid A performance.
Similar choice to make repair or replace.
I'm going to attempt repair myself to keep cost down.

ok so things are looking up.

so i can put pretty much any gear box that i can get my hands on, based on the balance of cost and perceived quality and usage and get it fitted straight in?

now that would be cool, to have 4 forward gears and not the 2 that i have right now

£150 is a good price for removal, refitting, oil and filter change, as it would cost you around £60 in parts (without box)to do it yourself. make sure he uses the correct oil (will cost about £40)

i would be wary paying £170 for a box from a dismantler, its likely to be untested (ive heard some stories.....) even though its got a 3 month guarantee on it, if it fails during the 3 month period, you may get your money back, but will still have fit another box(another £150)

personally i'd not pay the £170,  try a breakers?

best bet is to get one that you know is tried and tested, try posting in the parts wanted section. or check out ebay.

thanks guys things are looking up. having only 2 1/2 days experience of the Scorpio what do you think would be the key differences in feel and performance if i put the 24V gearbox in.

from what i've read am i correct in thinking that this the strongest gearbox option?

i dont think you will really gain much, if anything at all, but the box will take as much grief as a 2.0 can give it.
